JBS Swift fires Muslim workers

I was really surprised by this development. Companies seemed to be bowing to worker pressure to change the rule in the workplace, then this popped up in the news yesterday. Swift is a Brazilian-owned mega company, one of five-ish that controlls most of the beef in this country. It is attempting to buy out two of the other major players, a deal which, if completed, will concentrate sales in very few hands.

From the Rocky Mountain News

"The firings appear to be related to the walkout of as many as 300 Muslim employees Friday. Many of the workers had been suspended after walking off the job before their shifts ended.

The firings came a day after representatives from the union met with Swift officials to discuss workers’ concerns.

But many of the workers who gathered at a Greeley park Tuesday expressed their dissatisfaction with negotiations by saying, “No prayer, no work.”

Swift spokeswoman Tamara Smid said in a written statement that the workers were told they would be fired if they didn’t report to work when recalled. Smid didn’t specify how many workers were fired.

She said JBS Swift works closely with all employees and their union representation to "accommodate religious practices in a reasonable, safe and fair manner.""

Bit of a surprise that Swift demonstrated some back-bone with those muslibs. The article in the Rocky Mountain Pravda didn't mention it, but the hiring of the muslibs has caused huge externality problems for the town and they've complained to Swift.

Crime, disease, welfare, property values etc...

You can pray while doing any activity... no need to stop work to do so.
Good Job Swift!

Good to see Swift display back-bone, for sure.

I get tired of people complaining about job conditions after they've been hired when they knew what the constraints/duties were before they took the job.

Troll, I too thought it was about time someone stood up to the situation

FC, well said..in your line of work I am sure there is a lot of praying while doing something else, such as while taking a science test. lol And I agree

Joated, exactly, and all too common. We get a lot of it in this area with low level elected officials. They run for office, get elected, then whine about the hours and pay. Dang!
