Craig from IFB, it was a great post! One of the best I have seen on the issue.

I agree - that's one of the best articles I've read about the subject.

I liked the quote - “farming without a financial motive is gardening.” When I first started working with the financial aspects of dairy farming, it troubled me that we first had to state that our reason for farming was "profit". We all liked to think that we did it for more lofty goals!

But once we accept that we farm for profit - for this is the work we choose to do to support our families - we can move on to the most fundamental truth about farming (IMO) -- The most profitable enterprises on a farm are those that take the best care of the animals, the land, and the people.

I was somewhat amused at the various definitions of "factory farm" in the article. Those must have been penned by someone without any manure on his or her Italian loafers.

NW, people NEED to understand this, but almost no one who is not actually a farmer does. I thought Illinois Farm Bureau did a great job with this post.
