Missed

I was out in the sunset.

Camera right in my hand

Right there in my hand, turned on and zoomed out. Set on C where I often have it.

I failed just the same...missed completely

Too slow, too dark...too bad at aiming.

Thirty or so snow geese, honking softly, quieter than the ubiquitous Canadas, right behind me, the setting sun reflecting off the flashing white of their breasts as their wings beat black, pink, black, like traffic signals from the basement cat.

They were the exact color of flamingos, but seriously less elongated, like somebody washed them in very hot water. It was about the coolest thing in the world.

Oh my gosh. Heartbreak and beauty.

The missed photo and the heart that skipped a few beats for joy.

Your pictures captured the after-glow:0)

Happened to me as hundreds of white pelican lifted off just a few feet above my head.

No more memory on my camera card.

I let the camera fall to my side and smiled up into the blizzard of white.

The camera never does it justice. Likely your words did a better job than the camera would. That's what I think when I catch one of Sophie's huge smiles but miss it with the camera. At least it's in my mind's eye, perfect.

I think this is why people learn to paint. To put out there what they saw cuz they missed it with the camera.

The word is derpron, so I can post this. What on earth is a derpron?

GOLLY! That is just beautiful! And just like you...I always miss the really good stuff...like the coyote that ran beside me when I was coming in from checking fences. I don't like coyotes, but to have one right there running so close I could see the little sticks stuck it its fur...of course I didn't have the camera.

So you missed the geese, but you sure caught the color! As this and your previous post demonstrate, we have to look to the sky this time of year for our color fixes. Beautiful!

Wonderful shot even without the geese.

Lisa, thanks

Cathy, that must have been some sight...the pelicans. Thank God we have words when photography fails, because I can just picture them and share your awe!

Kristen, thanks, Sophie is such a darling! I am glad for the pictures that your family posts so I can enjoy her every day

JB, thanks, a depron is part of the government that regulated kitchen attire, a shortened version of the department of the apron....or maybe...

Linda, frustrating indeed. Wonder why the yote was doing that?

WW, and I am so grateful for the skies! I ran outside several times to get those sunset shots...I was supposed to be working. lol

Linda, thanks, sure was a pretty night.
