A Farmer Valentine

Millions and millions of mostly imported flowers will be sold.

Rivers of chocolate have been poured into molds, packed into fancy boxes, and purveyed for high prices all across our nation.

That is all fine and dandy. In fact my girls bought me chocolate and I am enjoying it immensely.

However, I wouldn't trade the farmer version of a valentine for anything. This morning boss got up several hours before chore time. I thought nothing of it. Sometimes his knees hurt so bad he goes down and sleeps in his chair so as not to awaken me with his tossing and turning. Sometimes he takes his worries downstairs for the same reason.

However, this time he had one of those feelings animal caretakers get. Something wrong in the barn. He went out on a hunch, figuring to check on the big cow, Verona, who looked like maybe calving last night when we left the barn.

She was fine. It was my young first calf heifer, Egypt, who needed a little assistance getting her baby born. He delivered the calf and made them both comfy and came back to the house.

Where he made a cup of coffee (he doesn't drink it by the way) and brought it up to where I was still asleep, entirely ignorant of all the drama in the stable.

I can't say I drank it up there. Habit dies hard and by the time he got in from the barn it was time for me to get up, so I did. Thus I am sitting here at the computer enjoying it and thinking that farmer valentines are the best kind available.

I wonder if the new calf is a bull or a heifer.

Yes, it is. Mine was the hubby doing the cow chores for me and asking me if I wanted to go out to dinner tonight! I like yours too! They can be so sweet when they want to!!

Nice way to start the week.

"I wonder if the new calf is a bull or a heifer."

Left out that little detail, did ne? Or maybe he mentioned it but the coffee hadn't kicked in yet.

Awwww . . this is so sweet at so many levels.

My valentine has a bad knee, too. He hasn't been on a horse in years - but he walks like an old cow poke.

Time for a refurbishing.

Happy Valentine's Day :-)

Dani, yep, sure started the day out right

NW, it was nice not to be the one worrying about early barn checks

Lisa, yours is such a sweetie too, isn't he?

joated, he just didn't bother to look. It is a milking shorthorn cross, so either way is fine.

WW, he certainly can be when he wants to. lol

JB, thank you! Back at you.

Cathy, poor Keith. It is hard to be falling apart, as I guess we all are now. My back is my nemesis. Too many years of milking in a parlor (my first farm job before I met the boss) that was built for six and a half foot tall men. The boss is a wreck from years of working too hard and never getting any rest to heal and years of catching baseball...many, many years of catching baseball.

GM, it was so nice!

FC, thank you and the same to you and the missus.

Linda, I really lucked out! Got my morning coffee, my exemption from calf pulling and then the girls bought me chocolate and Liz got me some flowers! I guess you can have it all. lol And the flowers look SO incredible this time of year. I can see how the tradition got started.

They CAN be sweet can't they? Mine made supper all by his lonesome self and served it up last night while I worked on a webpage.

Nita, he was apologizing for not "doing anything". I tried to point out to him just how much it means to have someone else take responsibility for remembering something and doing it....a lot!

Linda, nice! I don't know what is going on but mine has cooked for me TWICE this week!! Twice a year would be amazing, but twice in a week. One lunch and one breakfast. I am plumb overwhelmed!
