I also love the sound of cows chewing hay.
Question: if there is green grass all moist and soft, why do the cows prefer dried hay? What is the incentive for them to eat dry hay when they have a choice?

Jan, if only they were. lol

Linda, lol thanks

Keith, there can be a lot of reasons. REally lush hay can be extremely high in nutrients, while deficient in fiber. Cows will gobble dry hay to get that fiber. Early grass is also deficient in magnesium and they will eat hay to get that. In this particular case the pasture is eaten down to nubs that they can barely pick. With no rain it is just not regenerating. Thus we are feeding hay we would prefer to keep for winter, just to keep them going. We have two other pastures we are waiting for regrowth on, but same story is playing out there. No rain.
