Not a Gull

Sunday morning computer time...getting Sunday Stills posted and all...when a strange gull call echoes from the backyard.

I am busy. I ignore it.

For a while.

Finally the urgency drags me out the back door....to stand on the steps and finally look up.

Nope, not a gull. A pair of bald eagles circling in flight and crying at each other right over the Winesap apple tree.

I think they stayed three or four minutes or so. I think the big dark raptor accompanying them was a juvenile.

I think having bald eagles dancing around in your backyard is incredibly cool.

And then this morning a new singer was tuning it up in the mulberry tree, also right off the step. Having learned the red-eyed vireo last week, I recognized this as a very similar call but different.

Tried the white-eyed vireo call.

Nope.

Warbling vireo? Yes, I think so. Not going to claim it because I am not positive, but I am really close to positive that that is what it is. How cool is that?

Wow, what an incredible experience!! I would love to see some eagles - how incredibly cool. Great reminder to be curious, investigate the unexpected, and enjoy life.

Be well! Kat @ wherethesidewalkends.com

Had a 2yr Bald Eagle go over several weeks ago now. Mistook him for an Osprey and if he'd not been in molt (resulting in some oddly notched wings) I'd have not even taken pictures! When I downloaded the pictures off the camera and looked at them I realized that wasn't an Osprey....Haven't seen him since, and I've been watching, but I know they're in the area.....

I would love to have a mulberry tree in my yard, the berries make really good pies and jelly. The eagles would be a great thing to see,

Kat, I still get all excited when I see them!

WW, I sure wish I could be positive about the vireo. It's more kinda just a strong maybe....

Ruth, they are becoming more common here each year, but to have them right in the back yard and low enough to photograph was a genuine thrill.

Ellie, we have quite a few of them. The birds plant them. My late mother-in-law used to make pies from them, but I don't have the patience to take all the cores out. Plus the birds seem to beat me to them.

Mom, we really are, aren't we? I can't believe the things I see just sitting on my porch at dawn. Makes me hate the rainy days more. Feel as if I am being cheated out of the best part of summer. Love you!

Lisa, keep an eye out. there are quite a few around this year.

Cathy, the vireo is only a maybe alas. I actually did see the darned thing too, but they don't exactly abound with field marks. Someday I will have an expert to listen to June with me and tell me just what I am hearing. lol

Linda, thanks! wish I had gone out sooner!
