Staying Power

This cold haz it. Liz is for the most part over it, as is her hubby, who was the first victim in our immediate circle of folks.

The rest of us...well, not so much. You should have heard the living room last night. Sounded like a TB ward....which is where I got the title, The Plague and I, the other day....from Betty McDonald's book on her stay in one.

If you haven't read her books, they are dated, but truly enjoyable. I have seen some online reviews whining about perceived racism in them. All I can say is things were different then. The good lady was pretty liberal for her time. So much has changed....so much for the better. And it is too late to rewrite them....

Anyhow, guess I will see if I can find my copies and enjoy them tomorrow on my day off....curled up in my chair with the plague.

I want to publicly thank my mom, who pointed me towards so many books from the 30s, 40s, and 50s, which has certainly colored how I see the world. Although I wasn't always sold on the first reading, I kept going back and learned to love and delight in books of this ilk, all of Mary Lasswell's books, virtually everything by Dodie Smith, who is famous for I Capture the Castle, but who also wrote 101 Dalmatians, which like almost everything, was much better in its original book form than in any subsequent movie.

I actually read the whole novel aloud to various folks with whom I wanted to share it.

Anyhow, thanks Mom, for introducing me to the stuff you loved. I might not have liked some of these books much as a teenager....didn't really get them....but now I love them. I want to be Mrs. Feeley when I grow up.
