Gravity Doesn't Work on Baby Ducks

The very first day at camp we were met by this mother Black Duck and eight ducklings. The second day she lost one, but by the end of the week she still had seven, which is quite an accomplishment with all the pike, pickerel and bass in the lake, plus many hunters on shore and wing.

I got a kick out of watching how the little ones skipped over the surface of the water as if they weighed nothing at all.

Last week we watched a diving duck with some 15 (!) little ones in tight formation...mostly.

They scooted around the edge of the water withthe little ones ducking (no pun intended!) into the reeds and grasses. Mom would go in after the straglers and herd them back to the tight little pod. Occasionally one would dive beneath the surface. While it was under everybody moved a couple of feet down the shoreline. When the diver popped up to the surface, it would scurry as quickly as it could to catch up to the rest.

We watched them for 50 yards or so until the turned the bend and moved out of our sight.

Joated, it is so much fun to watch little ducks! For some reason this summer, there were no groups of little mergs, and only two groups of baby puddle ducks, but we enjoyed what we had

Cathy, thanks, i was so happy to get it, as they were SO cute scuttling around on the water
