Will he make it?

A poor little Eastern Phoebe is sitting on the black rocking chair on the sitting porch. He does not look too great in this terrible cold weather and the insects he eats are surely unavailable. I sure hope it warms up this afternoon.

I feel bad for birds when they don't get the weather they need to survive....we lost a bunch of ducks in a snowstorm a few years age.

Linda, same here. I think the phoebe probably died. He was singing every day and I haven't heard a sound from him since these photos were taken. I am reading all over the place of massive flocks of siskins and finches coming into feeders and devouring seeds and experiencing the same here. Also had a weak junco the other day. This weather is rough.

The Phoebes showed up here in SW Wisconsin today. She immediately went to her nesting site from last year. The light above my front door! Really wish she'd find a different spot.
When I lived in the Colorado mountains the hummingbirds would show up early and sit there in a foot of snow. I always thought they'd be dead by morning but they survived somehow. I noticed they ate a lot of small ants and nats to keep going till the flowers came out.

Anon, I think that little one on my porch didn't make it, alas. Haven't heard him since the cold snap. I expect there will be others, but I like the ones that nest next to my bedroom window. Our hummers are almost always late.
