Treasure Chest

I am such a treasure hunter...can never resist looking for cool stuff, whether it be shells, or stones, or interesting plants and animals. I think that is why I like birding so much....never know what you might find next.

Anyhow, my mama and dad gave me this box for Christmas. The box itself is treasure enough, but it was full of my grandmother's correspondence...... letters, Christmas and birthday cards, my aunt's 1953 Social Studies homework and tons of other items of interest. Even old phone bills for six dollars.....

I discovered that my late Godmother, my mother's college roommate, carried on an extensive correspondence with my maternal grandmother, long after college was over. She was such a dear and much missed. It was nice to read of her student teaching days and nice things said about my mama and aunt and uncles.

It made me feel better about those stacks of old Christmas cards and stray birthday cards and old newspaper articles and other odds and ends that occupy various spots in our domicile. I keep thinking I should throw them out...but maybe someday, someone, will find them and think they are amazing and awesome. You never know.

I am so glad you are enjoying your treasure box. There is more of that kind of stuff here, but it wouldn't fit in the box. You know how I treasure my Mother's little yellow box that is full of newspaper clippings of the adventures of her family. I guess you feel the same. I wish I had something of either of my grandmothers but it was all dispensed before I had a chance at it. Love you so much daughter. Mom

A treasure, indeed! And of a kind my descendants will not have access to, since almost all my correspondence now is via email. I guess they will be able to see my blog, but I wonder how long Google will keep it after I stop posting?

WHAT a wonderful and HUGE gift! I just love stuff like that...I have so many old photos and letters and cards I can't figure out how or even IF I could get rid of them.

Mom, I had a great time going through it! So many things that might have seemed trivial at the time but now have great impact. Thanks! I love you

Jacqueline, I wonder....I have had the same thought, and in fact used to keep a paper journal. This is so much more fun though... With the added plus of no notebooks cluttering up the place. My folks also gave me two diaries from the 1800s, as they know I find such things fascinating. I have been slowly working my way through them as the handwriting is very hard to decipher.

Linda, they gave it to me on bird count day, but I didn't get to look at it until now because of Florida and many other goings on. What a treat!

We have a box of old stuff that just surfaced at the Bossman's sister's on Christmas Eve.....they spent all night going through it and reminiscing.

Linda, I can imagine. Must have been fun. I was so delighted to go through the box....most of the things in it were from before I was born or when I was too small to take much notice. I really loved my grandparents and it was wonderful to get a peek into their lives and enjoy the memories.
