Addition

Bent on subtraction...yesterday's Coopers Hawk

I was introduced yesterday to a mathematical concept that was utterly new to me. This one.

It seems illogical, but it is the way things are done. Anyhow, now I know why I could never do those memes where they substitute cheeseburgers for numbers. And here I always thought it was because I got distracted by all that food. Instead it's from not paying attention in math class.

However, there is another sort of math we are pretty good at here at Northview Farm. Adding to the population of song birds.

Today's fledglings include two broods of baby Black-capped Chickadees, some Eastern Phoebes, at least one, if not two broods of Purple Finches, and some newly minted House Finches.

Fortuitously the mulberries are just getting ripe. However, the newbies are also getting lessons in bird feeders 101, except the phoebes of course. They are having insects instead.

The yard is teeming with birds making such a clatter and chatter.

I love yards like that! I am NOT having the hummingbirds I did last year. I think it's because of Terry's cat...Mindy Lou...Sigh! So I have cut back on feeders ( I DO NOT want to feed birds to Mindy) and hung up hanging plants instead. Sure is sad, but so necessary!

Linda, so sorry about the hummingbird thing. Wise decision though for sure.

MsRedhead, I have a feeling I never learned it. I hated math and did not pay attention in class all that well, but it is a pretty big concept to have gone by unnoticed. My kids knew it immediately though and spouted the rule right off. Oh, well....lol

Since we have a colony of feral cats residing around us, I'm reluctant to tempt the birds to my own back yard. So I love, love, love to read your stories about your birds. Thank you for satisfying my avian interests.

Jacqueline, you are so kind! I do enjoy the birds so much. Like a daily treasure hunt or a really good box of chocolates....you never know what you'll find. Yesterday a single Orchard Oriole in the same tree as a brood of immature Baltimore Orioles. I was thrilled. They sure do love the mulberries!
