Hi FC, no we just raise them for the freezer. We buy them from a fellow that raises really nice pigs though and this was an especially good litter. The owner is keeping two little gilts from it for future mothers. I like seeing your pig showing pictures on Pure Florida, and I love to see local kids showing pigs at our fair
Hey there laurahinnj, We do on occasion eat rabbit, having an extremely zealous hunter in the crew, (he is out right now in the pouring rain, with a sprained or possibly cracked ankle, pursuing wild turkeys) but these two are destined to sit around eating rabbit pellets and looking decorative. Thanks for visiting!
Hi laura, yeah, hunting is really big here upstate. Despite living abutted right up against a small village and having posted signs, we are absolutely overrun with loonies with guns every spring and fall. I am not against hunting at all, but I am anti-heavily armed loonie in the backyard shooting insanely. I worry every minute my men are in the fields working. Last year one guy pulled a rifle on my son and husband! We called the police, but they couldn't catch up to him
Yeah, like so many things, a few make a bad name for the many. We have worked very hard to instill good hunting ethics and safety habits in our son, and many people stop and ask and behave nicely about hunting our land. We don't allow very many though, as there is almost always one or two of us working out there on the fields. Then there are the ones who sneak in and blast away without a thought. We keep all the Jersey cows and the horses in the barn the first few days of deer season too. Samll and brown...or brown and white in the case of the Paint...equals deer to some folks.
Show pigs?
ReplyDeleteAbout 2 months from now we will be picking out a show pig for the Suwannee River Livestock Fair.

Hope the free bunnies won't be raised for the freezer too.

Decorative rabbits - I like that way of putting it. Mine are decorating various comfy spots right now.
ReplyDeleteI honestly didn't think anyone hunted wild rabbits anymore - hope he doesn't hurt his ankle any further!

ReplyDeleteLoonies with guns chasing deer give the rest a bad name, I think.
