Kindly old Mr. Gates sent some along updates yesterday, which Norton generously allowed to be installed, even though I had instructed via my settings that I be asked if I wanted to install such downloads. The seeming result of that is that Netscape, my browser of choice, no longer functions (could have been a coincidence, but since my profile vanished from the computer at the same time I don't think so. No viruses, no new spyware, so I am leaning strongly toward those pesky updates). Since I despise IE and don't find Firefox willing to open a number of my favorite news sites, I will be spending a long, long time, re-downloading Netscape on my slow-as-molasses dial up connection. If and when I get my shiny new, not working today, computer going I will visit all my favorites. Until then, just sign me....
addicted to the Internet and needing a fix
Ain't computing grand?
ReplyDeleteWe are all Microsoft's beta-test lab... and if you call, it's NOT a bug, it's a FEATURE! :)
When I updated to IE 7 (which the computer tricked me into) I had the worst time with it. I finally had to switch to Firefox full time. Now I only use IE for a very few websites. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI am having an attack of geekiness and I can't resist to add my comment :)
ReplyDelete...it's just impossible for firefox not to open a website that netscape opens! the two browsers use the same rendering engine!
if I may ask, what kind of news websites you find having problems with firefox?
Hope you get that fix soon!!!
ReplyDeleteEvery time I get these MS updates, I have to spend time that I resent straightening out what wasn't broken before so why did they try to fix it.
ReplyDeleteI would like to block MS from access, but then I would like not to die or pay taxes too.
Matthew, yeah, between Microsoft and Symantec, my computer is always telling me what I can't do with it...and it changes every day.
ReplyDeleteFlo, I hate IE, hate it, hate it, hate it. It is about as intuitive as a brick! I will admit that when I used Firefox it was pretty new, but I found it not too friendly either. Oh, well, I will get this figured out eventually.
Sue, I did some reading up and discovered that others have had the same problem with the situation.
For nohocapito, the main site I like that I could never open with Firefox is iWon, which I use for my news. Netscape didn't always work on it either, but I could usually get to it.
Jan, too bad they didn't get it right the first time, then they wouldn't have to fix it twice a month. I dread the very concept of Vista, which sounds like a nightmare.
Anyhow I downloaded Opera today and am having a ball playing with that. What a neat Browser, wish I had tried it a long time ago.
I'm going to have to send my laptop in for a fix sometime before May (when my warranty runs out). I would consider getting a new one but I, too, dread having to switch to Vista. Much current software (including my beloved and much-addicted iTunes for podcasts) will not yet run on Vista, and they have supposedly pulled *all* computers with XP off the market to force people to their sucky Vista. Maybe I should just give up and get a Mac ... or Linux.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the last dinosaur on dialup.
ReplyDeleteCaronline, I know just what you mean. EVen Kim Komando, who is usually very positive, keeps mentioning problems with Vista. I have heard that none of the freeware like AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm will run on it. I am so glad I bought this computer a couple weeks before the big change over.
ReplyDeleteFC, no out here in the hinterlands we struggle with it too. At least I can get on pretty fast (for dial up). My brother can only get on at 28 kbps. Bad!
About 6 months ago, one of the updates completely messed up my virus software. Nothing I did, including spend 2 hours talking to a very nice lady from India, helped me fix it. I finally ended up using Windows Live One Care virus scan. Imagine that, it was the only one that worked. :-|
