Faint Promises
Two days ago I stood on the back porch waiting for the dogs. The old dogs can go out pretty much unsupervised now, although Mike will get in the compost bin and eat apple peelings if you don't keep half an eye on him. However, Nick will go after the old sheep if you don't watch him, so I do. (This morning a cottontail rabbit got up right under his feet when he went out the door. Of course he gave chase. I called his name and said, "That'll do," and he stopped instantly, practically tipping over in his tracks, and turned right around and went back to tending to business. That is good boy type stuff, to come right off the chase without a backward glance. I was proud of him.)
Anyhow on that coupla days ago noon time I closed my eyes as I stood there rejoicing in the sun. (It is sometimes hard to see with the snow howling by and all, but it really is getting just a little bit higher over the horizon now.) I let it beat on my face turning the light behind my eyelids bright red, almost as if it were a summer day, and it felt GOOD. Did you ever do that when you were a little kid? Point your face at the sun with your eyes closed and look at all the reds and purples that you see and feel that blissful warmth? There was just enough of a breeze (as opposed to a frozen gale) blowing to tug at my hair that day that made feel me like walking right out and starting on the garden.
It was the most peaceful, yet invigorating moment that has come my way in many moons. A faint promise that finer seasons are on the agenda and may, in fact, show up soon.
However, yesterday a snippy little storm blew in, setting all the slush like concrete again, and spitting a couple more inches of snow all over everything, so a walk to the barn is fraught with real peril. And the wind is snarling around the house likie a werewolf, nothing balmy or promising about it today. It is February still and it still feels like it, and looks like it, but I sure am grateful for that little taste o' spring the sun allotted me the other day.
And on the bad days, breakfasts like this take some of the sting away. (Thanks Liz). Homemade waffles with maple syrup from the north facing woods down past the barn. What's not to like?
Homemade waffles always makes a day better. I hate that the cold won't go away. I feel bad that our temps are suppose to be near the 80s if not 80 this week. Hopefully it will warm up soon your way!
with your eyes closed...it was so perfect...spring will be around the corner....but then reality set in when you opened your eyes and YUCK, it's still cold and nasty out....a good thing happened this week..our seed order arrived...don't need it yet this week, but we're gonna be ready!
oh waffles and gobs of butter and REAL syrup...nothing can beat it...
pet peave....i just hate it when people call margarine "butter"...it's NOT BUTTER, it's crap!...they must've been raised on that crap and think it's butter...well it's not!..so don't call it butter, butter is soooo much better...enough ranting..have a good day and stay warm!
Our snow is gone, the ground is ready to work, but it is too early. Still there are those farmers out there that have plowed so of course today we have rain. Lots of rain. Rain is nice. I like the rain.
Those who plowed just got into too big of a hurry, now they will will have to wait and wait and then they get to disc clods!
I can't blame them though, spring, even a taste of spring is just wonderful.
I could almost feel the sun from your discription, thanks for the moment from the reality of what's on the other side of the front door...I couldnt' quite get the same from the waffle, so maybe I should come over, would Liz make me one? maybe two?.... please....
i did something similar the other day, except at night and completely different. i was leaving work, well after dark, and half way to my jeep i realized that i could hear the froggies singing. i stopped to listen, closed my eyes and a friendly little breeze blew by. it smelled of pine and rain and springtime and between that and the frog song, it made the whole wretched day go away. soon, my friend, soon your frogs will sing too.
The Wife, I never liked waffles until Liz started making them. We always had pancakes or fritters when I was a kid. She makes really good ones! And thanks for your kind words. I am not quite ready for 80, but 40 would be welcomed with open arms! lol
Anon, you got it exactly! Especially about the butter, it is so aggravating isn't it? There is no comparison!
Nita, February has always still been winter here, but somehow it seems extra long and extra cold this year.
Linda, we always get that here. The boss is always chomping at the bit when he sees some guys getting on the land before he does, but it always all evens out in the end.
WW, Liz should have a waffle party! And invite everybody over. We have lots of maple syrup and in about ten days we will have lots of homegrown sausage...
Anon, see above...about the waffle party. lol
mon@rch, evening milking keeps sneaking right up on me because it is still daylight when we head to the barn.
Ericka, that must have been a truly sweet moment! I love the sound of the frogs and just knowing they are out there. Our spring chorus is very limited compared to more southern areas, but we love the peepers, grey trey frogs and toads that sing at night...and the croaking of the greens and bulls. I miss them!
