What Do You Do in the Winter?

You get on committees.
And go to committee meetings.

Run to WalMart in snowstorms. Drive carefully and be thankful that everyone else is also doing so for a change.

You lose a longtime family friend and miss the funeral because no one gets the paper. (This was a friend of the boss, one of his many year's bowling buddies and auction going cohorts. We only found out that he passed because the boss asked me to look up who was at the funeral home today. He feels horrible about missing the funeral!)

Take pictures of bark (after all we live near the Adirondacks and word is that the Indian word means "barkeater" in reference to the limited menu during long hard winters there).

Photograph white-throated sparrows
through the grubby kitchen windows in lousy light....but you CAN see the trademark yellow nares.

And find owls in the backyard. It was almost dark, but this one, a barred owl I think, let Liz walk right up to him and only flew when she tripped...thus when Blogger gets over its recent moodiness and she can log into and post on BuckinJunction, she will have better pictures than mine....cause I stayed down on the porch.

****This bird photographin' thing must be contagious because now we practically jostle each other as we race out to take pictures of whatever has landed in the yard.

The owl is beautiful. And I had my first red-winged blackbird yesterday, too. Just one, but what a lovely sight he was!

I've never been a 'birder', but you're photos have been a great way for me to learn.
Looking forward to seeing Liz' photos next!
Sorry the boss missed the funeral, I always try to read the paper, but I have missed similar and it's a gut-wrenching feeling.

  3. I think you both took good owl pictures. But I did laugh about her trippin'! She didn't mention that on her blog! She is inflicted with the same graceful tendencies I am it appears!

I just got a good laugh out of this. On my blog right below your "What Do You Do in the Winter?" is Dan's that says, "You Have Two Cows." :)

  6. The birch bark photo is lovely and I do love the birds. That's an awesome shot of the owl. I've only seen a few since moving here; one during the day and a couple while driving in the evening.

I've been out taking bird pix's too or at least trying. Spring must be somewhat closer 'cause I've been seeing some different ones of late. Sorry about missing the funeral. We have one that the Boss should go to tomorrow but there is just no way he can make it.

  10. Akagaga, it was too dark to get much of a shot, but I was thrilled to see him.

Teri, it has been one of those weeks, with bad stuff and breakdowns. We didn't even get one paper...and I didn't even call, just too busy to worry about it. This is the price we pay. I am going to write them a letter to explain.

The Wife, it was icy and dark and he waited until she was real close at least. lol

WW, I hope he likes to eat bunnies...before they eat any more of my apple trees

Akagaga, more than two, lol, more then two

Deb, thanks, we were over at the college for a meeting and the horticulture students grow the most amazing stuff. It was yet another one of those funny things with the owl. I was just wishing we had some the day before.....

Dani, I wish we could...especially down you way. I only got to Florida once, but I must have added thirty or forty birds to my life list! What fun! I will never forget my first anhinga!

FC, not quite as tame as yours, but we were thrilled to see him

Linda, I feel so bad for the boss. This was someone he really cared a lot for....
