  1. My heart goes out to you all - I am so very sorry for your loss.

To lose a companion, pet and workmate is one of the hardest things I believe humans have to endure on this earth.

I'm sure he will miss you all as you will miss him :)

    RIP Mike -

  8. Saying goodbye to a pet is always terrible. When the pet is also your coworker and helper, it's far worse. Fifteen years is a good run, but not long enough. (((()))

  15. I read about your loss on Jeffro's blog. Losing part of the family is so hard.
We lost ours in '04, and our other baby is 15 next month. We're making as much quality time with her while she's still so full of life, but every now and then as little signs remind us of her age, we think about that eventual day.

    Y'all are in my thoughts.

  17. Never say "Goodbye".
Always say, "I'll always find you".
And you will. When you need him the most.
    He's so much stronger now.

I am so sorry for your loss, I have been through this and I know how hard it is. My sister has an old lab that is blind and has sugar. We are trying to say good bye to this dog but she is so much a part of the family.

Aw, 3C, I don't think there's much that's harder to deal with. You're all in my prayers.

I'm glad Mike's suffering is over, though.

  21. He looks like he was a great one indeed. It is so very hard to lose a pet and you also use them in your work. We lost our second Golden Retriever about a year ago and I still someetimes think I see her nose around the corner. I would like a new pet but because of health reasons cannot take care of one. How I miss not having a dog. When I saw this picture on another blog I just had to read about Mike.

  22. ThreeCollie, I am so sorry. I know how you must be grieving. Believe me, I really, really know. That will make more sense later this week at PF.
We love them all, but there truly are GREAT ones that sparkle above the rest. It has been obvious through years of reading NVD that Mike was that to you.

Thinking of you all in this time of loss.

  23. My sympathy to you; I went through this with my old collie, Dusty who died at 14; just faded gently away as befits a good dog. It was almost as if he was asking my permission to leave- he kept looking at me, and I'd tell him it was ok, then he'd sigh and sleep awhile. Hugs to you.

Thank you Steve, the last few months and weeks were so hard for him. Liz carried him in and out of the house. For some reason he didn't like me to pick him up and snapped at me. The last few days he could barely stand up at all...

Anon, thank you. So sorry that you are facing the same kind of hard times. Dogs become so much a part of the fabric of life...it is hard to let go.

My SINCERE condolences Threecollie, my heart goes out to you.

    A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS..........

    1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

    2. Give me time to understand what you want of me

    3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.

    4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

    5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

    6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

    7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

    8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

    9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.

    10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

~Take a moment today to thank God for your pets. Enjoy and take good care of them.

Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without God's critters.

  36. I'm so sorry to hear this. Your post about what dogs are for (in the end, it's about the love) was one of most touching ones I ever read. Have you heard the story of the Rainbow Bridge, where are pets wait for us? It's a very comforting story. Again, so sorry.
