June, it is brand new...or was. That is an old pic from the archives. Lemmie, the mama cow has had several other calves. That one is in front of its mother and she is licking it off just after birth. That is what they do when they have a new baby; they lick it very vigorously until it is more or less dry and the circulation is stimulated and its lungs are working well. During that time, the baby will hopefully stand up, and walk around to the other end for its first drink. Only very rarely do they lie down close to the mother, probably because of the danger of being stepped on. Cows are large and not particularly careful where they put their feet. They are indoors I believe because that baby was born in the harsh weather.
