How many of you western NY folks are familiar with it?
Do you like it?
Around here if you have Montgomery blood having someone bring back a loaf (or two) from Hornell is like Christmas, Thanksgiving and the 4th of July rolled into one.
And one of those wonderful brothers I have and his lovely wife, did just that day before yesterday.
After a brief meeting at the bottom of our washed out canyon of a driveway, Alan conveyed the precious loaves to the kitchen where we looked on in wonder.
We have had salt rising bread for breakfast
Supper
Snacks
General occasions of irresistibilty.
There is still some left......maybe I should hide it.
is it something eastern ny'ers can make or is it made of secret, you can't get it here, ingredients?...if impossible to make it, then i do suggest hiding it!!!! ENJOY!
ReplyDeleteWell, this eastern NY folk is mighty interested in this bread. Never heard of it before. Any ideas about a recipe?
ReplyDeleteWait ... I think I can smell it. :)
I've never tried salt bread before, but I bet I would like it.
ReplyDeleteBread has always been my downfall in life. When I was pregnant it was all I could think about. Thank Goodness for bread machines. :)
Heard of it... never tasted or made it... :)
ReplyDeleteIt is the little things in life that keep us going, isn't it? :)
A gift of homemade bread! Homemade bread is so good especially when someone else makes it! Hiding it sounds like a good idea :)
ReplyDeletewell it's late in the afternoon, did you hide it?...it's probably all gone either way! ha
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of salt rising bread. I'd like to know more and taste it.....hide some for me;)
ReplyDeleteOh man..Shaun loves that stuff! He asked his mom for the recipe a while back..it's a little intimidating for me though. It is a Montgomery thing for sure though!
ReplyDeleteAnon, the family buys it at a bakery in Hornell. It can be made at home, but it is real hard.

Dani, we love bread too. I have a special bread machine named Liz who makes really good bread....never lasts very long. lol
Sara, you sure have that right. We are so broke we squeak right now, but we are still eating well...creatively maybe, but well.
Nita, we love bread!
anon, he, he, he, it is under the potholders....don't tell. lol
LIlnda, wish I could!
Carol, back when Grandpa and Grandma Montgomery were still among us they went to Hornell pretty much every summer, and they always brought back salt rising bread...what a treat!!
I have heard of salt rising bread, but have never had the pleasure to taste it.

What/where is this salt rising bread bakery in Hornell?
ReplyDeleteLinda, I am thinking when you visit Western NY you will be maybe able to make a little side trip to Hornell and hunt down the Wegmans Bakery there....
ReplyDeleteSeri, welcome to Northview. You can Google Wegman's Bakery and check out the map for the one in Hornell NY. Hope you find it!

ReplyDeleteI found it on Google, thanks. But I'm not nearby, instead am looking for really good salt rising bread (most is not good) available via the web or mail order. Wegmans seems to be a chain of markets with no way to order that way. Does each of their stores make salt rising bread?
seri, alas, I simply don't know. We don't live near Hornell either, or near a Wegmans. A family member brought ours back from a vacation for us. So sorry
