Coopers or Sharp Shinned
You make the call.. Coopers have white at the end of the tail and a big head...this one has no white, but the tail is very worn...head seems smallish....but it is a pretty big bird like a Coopers.
***Verdict is in. Retriever Farm's husband is a biologist and he says sharp shinned. It was picking Sassenachs out of the wild roses today and Alan said the same thing. Thanks everyone.
Great photo - I don't know enough about them to make a guess either. We had a small hawk grab a blue jay the other day right by the kitchen window. I only saw the front of him but he didn't look as big as the one in your photo. My guineas scared him off :)
LInda, owls are hard...heck birds are hard. I was able to get pretty close to this guy, but it was snowing like crazy and the heifers we being oh, so, helpful so....

I haven't seen enough hawks up close to tell. I wonder if the raggedy appearance means it's an immature bird, molting into adulthood?
Maybe you could tell from looking at Abe Lincoln's "My Birds Blog."
I'm not sure either, but he looks cold ... and a little rough.
You know me and good at naming birds I am. But you took a great picture!
You get such great pictures!
Poor thing, he needs spring to hurry itself up.

my hubby the biologist says it's a sharp shinned.
Thank you one and all!
What a cool shot. I tried to get a photo of an owl last night, but it didn't turn out.
