I have always wanted one...along with a tank, if I get really lucky. This is the season when that situation becomes most acute.
Southern zone deer season opens Saturday.
I love venison. We lived on it last winter, along with a couple geese and turkeys....My family has always hunted, harvesting a few of the many wild animals that graze our ground.
However, yesterday I was jumpy all day with the sounds of big guns booming all around us. I truly hope they are just sighting them in and not getting a jump on the season, but most years we find parts of carcasses way before it is legal to take them. The boss went up yesterday and took a look around and didn't see anybody, but the sneaky ones wear full cammo and you can't see them.
I have always wanted to set a cannon right on the front lawn facing down the driveway.... And I want the tank to safely chase down all the damn fools who ignore our posted signs and shoot everything that moves, the whole, it's brown, it's down philosophy.... Saturday the brown cows will have to stay in the barn. Last year Moments lost her calf to hunters peppering her, now she has finally had one and is milking great. We want to keep it that way.
I often receive lectures from hunters on other blogs about the honorable safe hunters. Yes, I know they are out there, but they are not the ones we encounter. The good ones mind the posted signs and hunt where they are welcome. The ones we meet know they are breaking the law, long before we ever see them and they just don't care. I don't have a lot of respect or liking for them.
Just for information here are the New York State Posting and Trespassing Regulations
I think I will print out a couple of copies for the boss to hand out to the guys he meets who are ignoring them......
This is the phone number to report poachers in the state: 1-800-TIPP-DEC
Anyhow, be safe out there....
Yup, the slobs always ruin it for the good guys. Always!
ReplyDeleteJB, said it! It is always the bad ones that ruin it!
ReplyDeleteI so hear you!! I hate not letting the llamas out to the back pasture on the nice fall days.
ReplyDeleteGood luck dealing with the creeps who don't follow the rules.
ReplyDeleteAnd in your own pursuit of a freezer full of venison.
I hate the rule breakers. They make everything worse for the honorable people. I hope the farm makes it through hunting season without any incident!
ReplyDeleteYa ever wonder exactly what the fools are thinking, which they feel justifies their behavior? Not too long ago, they had facilities and "treatments" for this kind of person. And now they live among us. Please let me help you with your cannon.
ReplyDeleteone year, one of the dairy farms near my parents' painted their cows bright orange around this time of year. i think the vet got the animal safe paint for them.
ReplyDeleteevery year at home, people lose cows, horses, usually at least one dog... it's horrifying.
i have to admit that growing up, no trespassing signs weren't something i paid attention to, but i have NEVER done any damage anywhere. i usually dance around to keep from stepping on the flowers. the idea that people are okay with coming onto your space and destroying things is just baffling to me.
i hope you and yours weather the season safely.
We have one of thos canon's that just goes off (propane) doesn't shoot anything but sounds like it. We have to use it around the time the corn is fragil. Scares off the deer...would you like it? I'll send it too you. Just return it in August.

OK. The orange paint sounds like a plan, but for the creeps you're talking about here - the cannon.
ReplyDeleteA big one.
Pheasant season started this weekend here. I only had one bunch that really irked me - I heard the shots inside the house, stepped out, and they were driving away from my shelterbelt. Of course, they didn't have permission.
ReplyDeleteI've even had the house peppered by those morons. I swear, I've given serious consideration to shooting back with a rifle, just to see how they like it. I'm sure that would result in a fresh striped tan for moi, while they would get off.
Most, though, are thoughtful and fairly considerate.
JB, it is such a shame and the more folks move north from the city the worse it gets
ReplyDeleteLisa, exactly true!
Teri, better safe than sorry. We have to get one little Jersey heifer caught up and in a stall. She is small and brown so...
Joated, thank you and the same to you. Hope you get a nice one
Michelle, thank you. I am always glad when it ends
Steve, they are very scary people and there are so many young men that have become dear to us who hunt and thus are endangered, not to mention our animals. And thanks...you have already helped me immeasurably with my Canon!
Ericka, thanks, Alan has gone out deer lockering with a DEC tech and heard some incredible stuff
ReplyDeleteLinda, that is a pretty cool trick. Deer don't bother the grain corn too much here, but they do go after sweet corn some. Thanks, I am really kinda joking on the cannon, although if we every find another wooden one....
Cathy, I almost got a wooden one a couple of years ago, but we never made it over before the man sold it.
Jeffro, every one of us that spends much time out has been shot over or way too close. Crazy fools.
