  1. Awwwww! About how much do they weigh when they're born?

  2. Dani, she probably weighs over a hundred pounds. They range from maybe 55 to 115 or so, with calves outside the range in both directions occasionally. Magic would not lie down so Liz and the boss had to catch the calf, a messy and muscle-straining job.

  6. Does she have a pink spot on her nose? Is it, God forbid, a little scrape on her brand new tender little skin?

  7. So let me get this straight: a milking cow has to have help feeding it's new calf? Wow - never would have guessed that.

Are you feeding it milk from it's mother? How often do you have to bottle feed it?

And don't forget, cows love nice music (seriously).

  8. Linda, lol, she is really friendly and tame.

    Joated, much bigger! lol

Dani, we have on occasion had huge ones, in the 130-pound range..

    June, shiny new, pink spot!

Keith, dairy calves are hand raised on bottle and bucket. They get their mother's milk at first then milk from the commingled milk of several. Ours are fed twice a day unless they are huge and need a third bottle. They get grain, water, and hay as soon as they want it, which is often within a day or two of birth. They learn from the big cows that it is good and tasty. Many of them are working the paddle on the automatic waterers before they are three days old. Right now we are without a CD player in the barn, as they don't hold up very well in the damp, dusty atmosphere. However if somebody gets to Walmart soon we will be getting a new one. the cows like music and so does the milking crew. lol

  9. Yeah and most of the new ones are courtesy of Mandy and Blitz. You'd think they didn't understand the concept of "safe size".

  12. Keith has been on the road and just got back home.

I read this aloud to him and we're both smiling broadly.

Thanks for filling us in on the wonderful details of a calves first days.

  13. Cathy, lol A CD player was purchased yesterday by Becky and the barn now rings with music again (not so much to the pleasure of the boss, who prefers quiet). We had a great night, Beck and I, singing and dancing and being generally foolish....but how can you resist the High Kings' Whiskey in the Jar or Crosby Stills and Nash Southern Cross? The cows were busy with their hay and didn't even look at us funny.
