Expert Needed
My Site Meter hit counter ground to a painful halt last week and finally locked up at 209,702. It hasn't moved since last Tuesday. I have contacted the company repeatedly only to receive form letters with blah, blah, blah about migrating servers and it only lasting a few hours. Yeah, at least a couple few.
I am completely disgusted and am thinking about removing the code. However, I can't find it! I have scrolled and scrolled through the HTML code and just can't see it.
I actually put it there many moons ago, but the new template is so different from those days. Anybody know how to get rid of it? Or should I just leave the dead counter sitting there in the side bar as a sort of a monument to years of your visits? I just don't know.
Meanwhile I installed Stat Counter, which is okay I guess....I am lousy at change and have had Site Meter for years.
Thanks in advance....
I can see why your meter quit! That is great.
ReplyDeleteLooks like it's in "HTML 3" beneath the "Powered by Blogger" and "Blogshares" buttons. Oddly, the source code there says "www.website unavailable.com."
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure but it look like Sitemeter may also be installed in your blog footer? If you have two installs, they may interfere with one another.
Have you tried removing the old code and re-pasting the Sitemeter code?
I had both for a while and really prefer Stat Counter. I don't like change either, but I think you will like Stat Counter better.
ReplyDeleteYou can right-click in your browser and select "View Page Source" (in Firefox). Once the source is displayed, do Ctrl-F to open a search box. Type "site-meter" (without the quotes) and find the places where the code appears.
ReplyDeleteOnce you know where it appears, you can venture deleting it in Blogger.
Copy and paste the HTML into notepad and save as a txt file and attach it to an email to me at ruthcatrin @ scaryyankeechick.com I'll take it out and send it back.
ReplyDeleteIt's in one of the "widgets" you have installed. When you are logged into blogger, your blog page should appear with all the widgets having an edit button that looks like a screwdriver and an open end wrench in a cross. If you click that, you can remove it. I'd say the code has just been corrupted - you might copy and past the code into notepad and compare it with the code Sitemeter gives you for your blog. Then you can see the differences, if any.
ReplyDeleteLisa, sure is frustrating.
ReplyDeleteRebecca, thanks, it is there. I don't know how much to delete though. Once I figure that out I am going to try what you suggest. I am missing it mightily
Jan, Stat counter does seem to have a lot of depth of information. I am slowly learning to read it a bit.
Bill, wow, thank you! I am learning so much here. I didn't know you could do that.
Ruth, thank you! I am not sure I know how to do that, but when it gets quiet around here (three ring circus this time of morning) I will do that. Can I reinstall it do you think and maybe have it work, or is it toast forever?
Jeffro, alas, it is older code than that and was installed before Blogger put in the widget thing. It is actually installed in the HTML code for the template. I put it there myself, but I know nothing atall about doing such, just follow directions well. lol
You'll need to highlight all the code (start at the top, click-hold, and pull the mouse towards the bottom of the space, it'll be a pain), then right click choose copy, open Notepad (its on all windows computers) or Word if you prefer, right click in the middle of the page and choose paste, click File, Click save as, in the drop down box under the file name choose Text File .txt save the file under the name of your choosing, create a new email and attach the file and hit send. I have a site programming software that'll make it easy for me to find it and delete it. Thats what I did with my old blogger one or I'd be able to tell you where it was in the code lol.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I have no idea if Sitemeter will get it working or not. I've given up and taken it off my page entirely, I have issues with people who can't manage basic math functions.....
