Birding Northview

Has struggled between dimly dismal and downright dreadful this winter. Early in the season we were seeing some good birds, but these days our biggest excitement is a plethora of tree sparrows and that lone white-crowned sparrow that is hanging around.

Thus I literally leapt out of my chair this morning when a large, dark-winged shadow swept across the edge of the big windows.

I was glad I did. A big hen Cooper's hawk was perched right on the sitting porch railing, probably in pursuit of some of those various sparrows.

It was a thrill to see her, so close and wild. Alas she was too quick for the camera. I will take this as an omen that things are going to be picking up soon. Not that I don't love me my chickadees, but Alan says there are killdeers in Virginia. I am ready for a killdeer.

  1. That's pretty cool - I hope you get a chance to photograph both, soon.

  2. What a lovely message from Alan.
    "There are killdeers in Virginia."

BTW. What would I give for a white-crownded or tree sparrow? And a Cooper's on my railing ?!

  4. I miss seeing the killdeers. Used to see them all the time at Fort Desoto.

  5. Rev. Paul, thanks!

Cathy, he reiterated that last night when he called. He also saw sandhill cranes, a life bird for him. I am so glad for him. I have a lot of spare tree sparrows, if the Coopers doesn't eat them all I will send some soon. lol

linda, no blackbirds here yet, but soon now...soon....

Dani, we are only a few months without them, but I miss them! I love to hear their mournful cries echoing off the heifer barn when they fly by.
