Passing By
It is clearly still high summer. Grass and trees are green and bright. The sun, on the days when it is not obscured by clouds or fog, turns everything bright peach and orange as it tugs itself free of the horizon. Blazing blue indigo buntings chirp from the giant foxtails as they nibble seed snacks and warn off intruders. Tractor pulls proceed apace...when they are not rained out that is. The fair season is in full swing, a new one every week. Shiny calves, and gleaming horses fill trailers passing by on their way to this county and that, in hopes that they and their young owners will outshine the competition there. However, the fruit is filling fast. I swear, you can see the apples' waistlines expanding day by day. Sumac heads wax fat and purple, flocks of this and that are gathering to chat and clatter loudly as they pass overhead or congregate in trees. Only a few weeks remain until first frost. This way too wet, crazy green summer is passing us by. I am not ready, I gotta tell you, and I'll bet you aren't either.
How accurately your words capture the essence of summer growing late! For me, it's the goldenrod blooming now along every roadside and the call of crickets in the grass that signal approaching autumn.
Lisa, it isn't even the first of August yet, but it is moving right on by without waiting. Yow
Cathy, I often wonder why we continue to spend winters in such a horrible climate. I mean, the cows tie us down, but are cows forever? I don't know, but I do know I am miserable all winter long and nervous about winter most of the summer. Ugh.
Linda, this has been such a shabby excuse for a summer. Constant rain, crazy heat. Right now we are having spectacular weather, but I find myself waiting for the other shoe to drop, weatherwise.
WW, yes! Katydids started up just the other day and now they are grinding along night and day. Such a mixed up season this year.

I can't believe how fast the season has passed us by!
I have a theory that the entire universe is speeding up and no one has refuted my theory.
Another memorable line:
" . . turns everything bright peach and orange as it tugs itself free of the horizon."
And, my friend . . that's a safe bet you placed at the finish. Very.
I know...makes me sad.
