We were Bored

We have a certain amount in common with these

Well, not really, but it was fairly quiet around here. So of course a big yearling heifer had to run into the forage wagon and get stuck under it.

All hands on deck to get her out. She was well and truly stuck, so the boss picked up the back of the wagon and slid it sideways off her. She is fine, although glad to be upright again.

Then, while everybody was right there handy, he decided to put the bull back out in the heifer pen. You may remember he jumped a six-bar gate Sunday to get to a cow he fancied...

First time he was moved he was pretty quiet for a bull. This time he was on the prod and pretty nasty. The boss let him run himself into the wall a couple of times and that kinda...sorta....calmed him down. Hopefully the very hot electric wire that is now strung around the top of the pen will convince him that he should stay with his harem.

So now, having had all that fun, the guys are taking the roof off the wagon. It was getting pretty bad and we were afraid pieces of metal were going to get in the feed and make the cows sick. Becky and I bowed out of that venture.

  3. " . . the boss picked up the back of the wagon . ."

Whoa. I can hardly lift a 10 lb. bag of birdseed.

Yeah. I can see you guys need some excitement over there. Yawn. ;)

  4. Cathy, oops, I was unclear...he used the skid steer, which is of itself quite a feat as it is much over matched by the size of the wagon.

  5. It's good to learn. Now, seeing as how I don't know a skid steer from the rear-end of a steer . . . I'm gonna google it. More learning. I love it. I was hanging over the plumber yesterday as he roto-rooted the tiles leading into the sump pump. I'm serious. It is fascinating . . . the things that make this world work.

  7. Really there isn't boredom on a farm...just time that you stop for a breather!

  8. cathy, so how did Keith like the skid steer? lol

Linda, that is for sure! And when I read about you and your valiant doggies going out to change water alone in the night I know it all the more.

  9. He failed !

When I googled images he said he'd a called that machine a bobcat or front-loader.

  10. Cathy, lol. both are perfectly good terms to describe the same machine. It is made by Bobcat, and lots of people call all skid steers by the name bobcat as a sort of generic term. And it is also a front end loader. We have had so many different brands over the years that they are all just skid steers to us. The most versatile and useful machine on the farm, from feeding, cleaning, landscaping, hauling anything that needs to be hauled. It does it all and more.
