Rainy Days and Fridays

After a long and welcome dry spell, rain has set in. The light is so pretty, all golden and pink, but I am not looking forward to milking wet cows.

We kept at the vegetable storing yesterday, putting up several quarts of zucchetta. Next year we are going to start the plants in February, as this is really LONG season stuff and just coming into its own. Another couple of weeks without frost and we could supply the entire county with some left over. Meanwhile, we are going to start giving away the extra.

Boss is slogging away at the hay. Boy is tromping the property line, putting up posted signs and scouting around. Becky is working two jobs, here and there, as always.

We watch the news in gloom and despair, wondering how much worse things can get.

Better to walk away from electronic media and go outdoors and look for birds. Black throated green warblers for the list yesterday. Thought I had been hearing them all summer, but didn't trust my ear. Then, there they were, darting around in a big maple up by the cow lane. So glad I sent Becky in early and took the cows to pasture for her.

Have a good one.

I agree. As bad as things are, the media makes them ten times worse.

  2. Autumn is so pretty. With all the glorious colors the sun casts.
I agree, shut of the TV and head outside. :)

  3. I agree...the media makes things worse so Terry and I don't watch..nor do we try to get into conversations with people as they get so wound up it's hard to really have a conversation.

It's cold here and colder and the wind is terribly sharp.

  4. Exactly.
Go to nature for the deeper, lasting truths that nourish the heart and soul.
    We watch absolutely no news.
    Period.
    Can't take it.

  5. PS
Special place in my heart for black-throated greens.
It was my first successfully ID'd warbler :)
    Love em.

  6. Jan, that is true. Alas, this time, things seem really bad. I simply don't know what we are going to do about the health insurance thing. The boss is old enough not to have to worry about that having already been sucked into the government net. I am just young enough to need to go shopping for something we dropped years ago because we couldn't afford it. Word is it isn't any cheaper now than then, so I just don't know what to do.

CDH, I stood on the lawn just after dawn this morning waiting for Miss Daisy to take care of things. There was a hen turkey calling up in back. Cardinals and some dark little sparrow-y things in front. A Carolina wren. Despite the gloom, fall colors were like a faded tapestry rich with time and dignity. Washington doesn't know what it's missing.

Linda, I am captive because the boss has the TV on when he is in and the volume control is broken. Ugh.

Cathy, as I said to Linda, I am captive here sometimes. Outdoors is good and this is the best time of year for it. I was thrilled by the black=throated greens, and excited to recognize them immediately. I have been following the Facebook Bird ID of the World group faithfully for a few weeks and it is really helping me nail ids. Great group.
