An Apple a Day
For a little while at least. Made a quick trip to our favorite orchard, Bellinger's Orchard, up on Argersinger Rd. and bought half a bushel of Ida Reds, half a bushel of Northern Spies and a peck of Pink Ladies.
Apples are my favorite fruit, and these are among my favorite varieties. Of course I have at least twenty favorites, but my tastes run especially to the hard, tangy, "keeper" apples that taste their best late in the seaon.
Don't they look wonderful? If anything by chance goes right next week I'd like to get back up there and pick a whole bushel of Pink Ladies. They will keep most of the winter and still taste like a million dollars, months from now...provided there are any left.
If you are looking for some apples to store for winter, or for your Thanksgiving pies, or just to eat today, tomorrow, the next day and so on, just for your health and for the entertainment of your taste buds, take a run up and get some, because I guess they will be closing soon.
Mmmm! Love those Ida Reds! They're the closest thing I can get to a Jonathan here in NY. I keep them in a cool pantry cupboard and when I open the door, the fragrance is heavenly. They make great chunky applesauce because they don't turn mushy when cooked. I've never tried Pink Ladies. Now I will.
ReplyDeleteDo miss Apple Country this time of year, or what!
ReplyDeleteWe very seldom get good apples here in Florida, I think most of them have been in cold storage too long. On the other hand we do get great citrus so I guess it is a trade off.
ReplyDeleteWW, have you tried Jonagolds? They are another one I like real well. We have a little Ida Red tree that gives us a couple dozen apples each year, but we don't spray, so they are buggy and won't keep.
ReplyDeleteCaroline, I would miss it terribly. I was so happy yesterday to get some apples to store and to eat. Gotta get them put in one of the cold rooms now.
Ellie, my brother was just telling me that yesterday. He lives up here, but is working a job down there for a couple of weeks and he went and got some apples too. He will take them down with him so he has some good ones to eat. I envy your citrus! Only got to Florida once, but I was simply stunned by the oranges. Wow! Nothing to compare up here in the north.
Thank you for the kind words and thinking about us in your blog!
ReplyDeleteLinda, thank YOU! A trip to your place is a great pleasure to me. I was happy all day after finally getting up to get some apples...and now the parlor smells so nice, as it isn't heated so I stored them in there.
ReplyDeleteI grew up on an 180 acre apple orchard so I understand the delight in fresh juicy apples!

Linda, I made applesauce yesterday, with some of the Northern Spies. The house still smells of cinnamon and apple.
