The Cardinals Came

There is a drawback to walking for exercise. Once you start you can't.....not.....

Come dusk I was  restless....

I hiked up behind the barn almost to the 30-Acre Lot, to my favorite birdie hot spot in the darned near darkness.

Chinking calls all around. Sounded like Cardinals, but there have never been that many Cardinals. Ever.

And then they came. I wasn't pishing. I wasn't doing anything...just standing there in the lane. But still they came.

A wave of Cardinals. They were silhouetted black against the tinfoil sky, no color to be seen, but they were what they were just the same.

If you stand there they will come.

I saw at least a dozen, but if all the birds chinking in the bushes were Cardinals there were many more.

Then came something that sounded like a chicken. Buck-awk-k-k-k-k-k. Took  a while to recognize the sound of a hen turkey flying to roost. .time to go.

It was plumb dark down at the buildings. And spooky. Even the steer rustling in his pen as he ate his evening hay sounded ominous.

Kinda sad that it was only five o'clock.....

  2. Oh my gosh!!! I've been doing the same thing . . . only I don't get a dozen cardinals :) We're in central Ohio - Outback of my brothers . . . and for the last few days . . I'm even wandering off the porch after the sun sets. And Ten Mile got it right. An artist with words and pictures.

  4. Our mailman runs so late I take the flashlight to get the mail. I will not put my hand in a Dardanelles mail bos. The sky is usually really pretty in late evening. We have a flick of doves that roost in our tree, it makes them scatter when I walk under it. I think they come back and get closer to my car so they can poop on it all night. I have a red car with white dots in the morning.

  7. TenMile, thanks! REally, I am not all that skilled with it, but there is a lot of good stuff out there at which to point it.

Cathy, thanks. There are so few daylight hours...you just have to take what you can get. Our deer season will start next weekend and I will be a bit curtailed, but I will try to walk. Already the crump of shotguns going off can be heard near and far.

Linda, I would share if it were possible. I have never seen that many at one time before.

Ellie, Yow, I wouldn't either! Wish I could see your evening skies! I hope I get to Florida before too many years go by. I sure love it down there.

    NotThatKindofFarmer, thanks!
