The Only thing You Hear

Is crickets

I am ashamed to say that I find even minor mistakes in books awfully irritating. Like I was reading an otherwise entertaining novel yesterday and there were crickets chirping in the early spring.

Yeah, yeah, way beyond minor I know, but when you live by the seasons and are listening to three or four billion of them chirping around your yard.....and it sure as heck ain't spring....you begin to suspect that the author lives in town and observes the seasons through a closed window.

Fin loves crickets. He thinks they taste like chicken, only grittier.

There are myriad other insects as well.

Some of them are even pretty.

Bug

Very soon the box elder bugs and lady bugs will begin to filter through the walls like so many inopportune ghosts and I will wish, as every fall and winter, that there were out-sects!

  2. I love your writing. These lines particularly made me smile and smile:

" . . when you live by the seasons and are listening to three or four billion of them chirping around your yard.....and it sure as heck ain't spring.."

And this: "filter through the walls like so many inopportune ghosts . ."

And I love bugs as long as they aren't biting me or eating my house :)

  3. Oh, how I agree with you. I was reading a book once where the cotton was knee high. The person talking in the book was very irritated with the farmer, who was turning into the cotton field to plow.

OH! COME ON! GET REAL!!! If your crop is knee high you sure as heck aren't going to go in there and PLOW. You only plow to get the ground STARTED to get ready to plant!!

    SISH!

Our crickets are LOUD also...sorta sad they sing...winter is coming on chilly wings.

  4. Jan, they are such pests! And now we get a few brown marmorated stink bugs every winter. have to be careful disposing of those.

Cathy, I find many of them fascinating, but I miss the rock bass we used to keep in a 5-gallon tank in the office. He LOVED lady and box elder bugs and every time we found one we tossed it in to him. The resulting spursh and splash was so satisfying!

Linda, the flip side is when you rind an author who knows what they are talking about. Then it is such a pleasure to read and think, 'yes, yes, this is just how it is'. I can't believe how fast our crickets are chirping. Supposed to signify the temperature but if it does it must be a thousand degrees on the porch. lol
