Marianne, I put Jonna on an ID quest yesterday with a plant I'd not seen before. She does plant monitoring in the local nature preserves with experts and she said she'll ask them. I'l bet she'll know this plant but she can ask around if she doesn't :)
No, I don't think this is Poison Sumac, which has loose clusters of flowers that dangle down. This looks more like the flower clusters of Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra). Was this a shrub? If it IS Smooth Sumac, it is a very valuable source of food for birds, so I know you will love it. I also has gorgeous fall color, as all sumacs do.
Jacqueline, thanks! It is a small, shrubby plant, something I have never seen before. I will keep an eye on it for fall color. Wonder where it came from....
Jonna, it is just a couple of feet tall and growing in the shade along the driveway under some box elders. It is nothing I have ever seen before. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteThanks, Cathy, I am afraid that it might be Poison Sumac...

ReplyDeleteHmm...how tall is it? Is it in sun or shade?

looks like false nettle. Friendly to butterflies, but invasive.
ReplyDeleteI'm more inclined to think it is False Nettle. I'll let you know if I come up with anything else.
