The boss took me up to Bellinger's Orchard today so I could pick some blueberries. Becky has been keeping me in the grocery store variety. As you might expect there is no comparison, although I am grateful to have any kind for my salads.
However, as soon as we got home I rinsed a couple of handfuls of the fresh-from-the-orchard kind and put them in a bowl on the table.
Before I was even done putting away the other stuff we had brought home from a morning's excursions the first ones were gone. It only took a little longer to eat the second bunch.
10 out of 10 would recommend you go pick a quart or two, but do your best not to eat them all at once. I did manage to curb my enthusiasm, but they aren't going to last long.
Yum....
Great minds.... I picked 6 pounds (about 4 quarts) this morning at Murphy's Blueberry Farm. We kept one pint out for immediate use/enjoyment and froze the rest. Excellent morning for being out before the heat came. I don't know if I'll be back out for more, but it's a possibility.
ReplyDeleteMmmm fresh berries!
ReplyDeleteI don't think huckleberries grow out east but they were my favourite berry when I lived in BC. We don't have them here, but I discovered a bush of Saskatoon berries growing on the riverbank right by the gazebo. Hope I can get some before the birds get them all.
Joated, that is impressive! want to get back up and pick more when I have more time. I love blueberries any time of year but you can't beat them fresh out of the field. Plus I love to support our favorite orchard. They are such a huge asset to the community.
ReplyDeleteShirley. They are wonderful! I have read about Saskatoons and would love to see (and eat) them. lol. I am pretty sure the western huckleberries are different than the blueberries we have here, but some of the old timers here call them huckleberries. By any name they are one of my favorite fruits. I need to go up and pick more.
Lots more. lol
Oh Marianne . . This email wouldn't go through:

Thank you so much. The chuckles and smiles that bloomed as we shared life's fun and funny happenings with you, Ralph and Becky sit - honestly - right at the top of our most enjoyable moments these past few weeks.
We're settled in our room here in Syracuse . . hooking up machines - sound, CPap, phones, computers . . . and feeling grateful to live in a time when travel, internet communication and air conditioning are available :)
And grateful for friends like you and Ralph.
Hugs from Syracuse,
Cathy and Keith
P. S.
You live in such a beautiful area!
For miles and miles I rhapsodized over the scenery. The Mohawk River is amazing.
Cathy, we loved meeting you both even more than we expected to, and I knew it was going to be great. I am so grateful that the Internet has connected us with so many compatible, wonderful, fun, good people! So glad we met in real life after all these years. Hugs right back at you.
