Here is a pretty good editorial bringing up the same things I said the other day about MPC or milk protein concentrate and unrestricted food imports. Not to bore you to death or anything, but unregulated importation of the darned stuff is pretty rough on farmers here.

Yuck! It's scary what makes it's way into our food these days, and how imports effect local farmers. Have you read Barbara Kingsolver's book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle? It advocates locally, organically grown/produced products--seems the way to go, doesn't it?
I can't believe how our government treats farmers!! It makes me so mad! My local paper had a big story reporting that twenty years ago, there were over 700 small farms in our area.. and now there are fewer then 300. What a disgrace. The govmt is practically running small farmers out of business, and funneling in foreign exports that can poison us. This really smells fishy!
Thanks for keeping up the good work on the farm, despite the system working against you.
Chris, it is scary, but I don't trust organic any more than conventional...and organic production is hard on animals that are denied the best in medical care.
Mrs. M, Same here. some of our best friends are selling the cows next week...a real tough choice!
May I recommend Bill McKibben's new book, "Deep Economy"? It's about producing everything, as much as possible, closer to home to save local economies and the planet.
I, too, worry that our government is so busy watching out for big corporations with tax breaks and subsidies, that the small farmer has little hope. Their policies also contribute to obesity and diabetes because things like corn syrup are cheap while fresh fruit and vegetables are expensive.
Don't get me started on ethanol!
