80 Year old farmer killed by bull. Liz went to school with one of the grandchildren from this family. We are working on getting Promise and Frank, our two bulls, blood typed so we can get them sold. I am going to call the Holstein Association right now to get a kit. I already have one for the milking shorthorn bull. He is starting to woof at us from the fence and turn sideways when you walk by...not good.

I saw this story in the Daily Star yesterday, also. What is it about bulls that make them behave this way? Do they turn nasty after a certain age? Do most farmers like to sell off their bulls rather than keep them?
What a sad thing to happen. Recently in England a man was killed by a cow when he went to tag the calf.Is it usual for bulls to be aggressive because from my short time on our farm I have noticed that it is the female that are more aggressive?
Sara from farmingfriends
Mrs. M, Bulls are probably more dangerous as they get older, but they will hurt you even when they are young. For a few years of prosperity mot many farmers kept bulls. However, AI is expensive and hard to accomplish on really big farms, so now there seem to be more bulls around. We have three, two of which are going bye, bye asap.
Sara, I hate to hear about it, but it happens terribly often. Bulls are more aggressive than cows generally but they will all hurt you sometimes. Cows with calves are terribly protective. We have one that protects ALL calves and she is pretty dangerous. We try to keep her separate from cows having babies so we can safely take care of them and their mothers.
I bumped into your blogs quite a few times already, so I figured it was about time to say hi !
I read quite a few posts and all I can say is :
- Wow ! What a life !
- You kind of make me dream... farm, nature etc. I feel trapped in my city !
I'll be back for my shot of nature and green !
Keep on blogging ! ;)
Zhu, thanks so much for visiting and for taking time to comment! It is certainly an interesting life.
Hmmm. I guess I'll think twice when I drive down country roads in Ohio thinking 'nice cow' when I see those bulls standing in their own enclosure. That is such a sad story about the elderly farmer.
Cathy, it was such a sad thing. Liz is friends with close friends of the family involved and it was just bad timing, bad luck and a bull that picked that day to turn bad. Sad all around.
Ahhh - bulls are not the only bad ones.
See the 2nd paragraph - we knew this rancher, too.
Gee moos, I am real sorry to read about that. First time I heard of such a thing as a sheep killing somebody, but I can believe it. We had a nice ram we had to sell because he took a dislike to my late m-i-l and kept knocking her down.
