Without seeing the video, I probably will regret my guess but to me it appears to be a Juvenal Red-shouldered Hawk. Although the Rock Pigeon is 2/3 the size of a Red-shouldered Hawk.
Hi mon@rch. I was hoping you would answer. Usually I can get hawks, but with this one overhead like it is we couldn't be sure. We think it may be a Coopers. We put up the video and if you look at the other matching video in the menu below it looks remarkably similar.
red tail? haven't watched the video yet.....
The speckled back and white above the eye is what was fooling me with this bird! Looking at the video and seeing its longer tail, tail stripes and pattern with the underwing . . . I would have to agree with you in this being a coopers!
WR, we are leaning toward Coopers Hawk, which was actually our first thought...but the thing looks so big up there on the ridge pole.
Mon@rch, thank you again for stopping by to help with the identity. Usually hawks are not so hard!
