There is simply nothing wrong with having a sense of humor.
Folks who move next to farms have to understand that farmers...well, they farm. This can sometimes result in odors, dust, noise and things non-farmers would rather not see, hear or smell, but they are part of the job. I am grateful that NY has right to farm laws and Ag districts to protect farmers' ability to do what they do. Thus we probably won't need to build our own Stone Henge out of old demolition derby cars.
I also like the reasonable way farmer Rhett Davis spoke about his actions.
"I respect that they're here and spent a lot on their homes, but on the other hand, give me a little bit, too," Davis said. "I've been here since I was 7 years old."
He said he doesn't intend to keep the cars up permanently.
"These can come out just as easy as they went in," he said.

I saw the story, too. Hilarious! But ugh-- city slickers! [rolls eyes]. They build their McMansions next to a farm and love the view, but can't handle the flies, mosquitoes, and manure smells?! Like, DUH! lol!
I believe the world's stupidest people, and there seem to be no end to them, are people who buy homes and then complain about what was near them when they closed the deal.
We had a nearby feedlot shut down because the people that bought the land next to it didn't care for the smell. Sad but true. It's good that your laws prevent that.
Yup, and people wonder why we think city people are not too sharp!
New neighbors can be a worry for farmers for sure. Subdivisions and new homes are popping up everywhere here - fortunately we have laws here that protect us as well but the hassle you have to go through getting those laws enforced can be costly and painful.
If only people would educate themselves about farm life before they purchased a home/land next to a working farm....might prevent this very thing. It's not all about the view.
I know some of our farmers have erected signs that say, " This is a working farm. Expect seasonal noise, traffic, and odors."
I believe that is a preemptive strike against later complaints.

That was the absolute BEST BEST BEST!!!! Thank you for sharing the link. Last week they put markers on our road to bring in UGH town water. The land has been vacant around here becase of no water. I'm glad I was granted Ag District last year, but I still cringe at the thought of the future. Thanks again for making my day!!!
Mrs. M, I simply loved the story because the guy made his point, but he was cheerful and funny about it. Me, I just get frustrated and cranky. I admire his sense of humor
Jan, There is no end....no end at all. We are surrounded on three sides now. People repeatedly cut our fences to make racetracks, ride 4-wheelers in the crops. It will drive you crazy sometimes
Linda, what a shame. Sadly it is getting more and more that way here too. You may have the law behind you but sometimes you are still forced into a terrible legal battle
JB, indeed. Since 9-11 we have had droves move here from NYC. they jump right into local government and do all they can to change the way the area functions....and the crime, oh Lordy!
Deb, they pass out brochures here with real estate proposals to try to explain what to expect from a farm. But you simply haven't smelled slurry until you actually smell slurry.
FC, they are smart. We have a huge farmer around here, stored manure facilities etc. He goes around in manure spreading season to all his many, many neighbors, since he is so huge, and asked when their parties, barbecues etc are planned. Then he works his schedule around them so as not to offend. He doesn't have to, but it is the right thing to do and I admire him for it. He also incorporated which makes it better for everyone.

It made our day too and we talked about it all through milking. Town water...dang...it seems like a good thing, but you know it won't be. We have it here too and we are surrounded by developments less than 15 years old on three sides. Doesn't even feel like being in the country any more except that the farm is fairly large.
