Here is a fantastic column that in one place debunks, in clear, plain, English, much of our cultural love affair with emaciation. I was ready to holler Yeah! when I finished reading it.

He writes a great column....I think the attraction to "thin" has become ridiculous and the women look just plain ill....
I do think that obesity is a problem in our country, especially in children. That's not to say I think they should all be stick figures either, just healthy.
Deb, on the obese kids front, I think the blame lies squarely on not being able to play. So many kids live where they aren't safe outdoors...or where there is no outdoors except asphalt and concrete.
They miss so much.
Not just the activity that burns off the calories and makes their bodies strong and healthy, but the connection with living things and beauty that is so good for the soul. Our farm kids probably don't even realize just how lucky they are to enjoy time outdoors.
You are absolutely, 100% right on the money. I think this has much to do with obese adults as well. When people started moving into the cities and giving up their "farming" lifestyle, we saw obesity start to become more common as well as other maladies that affect the mind as well as the body.
Not a lifestyle change that I think was a good move for mankind.
It's hard for my kids still to understand why "chores" are a good thing :)
Have a great day and stay warm :)
Thanks, Deb, same with my kids, sitting with a remote in one hand and a mouse in the other is a lot more fun than shoveling....Not that I am any different. I have to kick myself to get myself moving pretty much every day.
There wasn't enough there, but just enough - not a fat writer is he? My own bias is against the doctor that wants my blood test results in a certain healthy range - and then feeds me poisons to change my liver and kidney functions so the numbers match the recommended. I stopped taking the medications and am feeling better daily. I have a large nose, crooked by design (not ducking enough or quick enough) so weight hasn't been a large issue in my life, I like to jog, healthier than taking pills forever.
And the comment about men liking thinner women - tain't so, Curves matter, smiles are always curved and thin tight lips sink more than ships.... Grand dad liked something to hang onto, and he did.
Earl, boy do I agree with you on the drugs that make you sicker than the "disease". When you need a liver biopsy to take a medicine, you might want to be real sick before you take it. And what they don't tell you is that there has never been any proven link between blood cholesterol and disease. The drug companies don't want you to hear that though. Good for you for jogging and all! The best I can do is stumble over to the barn, do the chores and stumble back...although I am planning a hunting trip with the kid...as soon as it gets over 14 degrees with a howling wind! Take care!
