It's the visible inner workings of an older scale. The indicator needle is pointing just a bit after nine o'clock.
I know it is a scale, but the wordless is pointing at the lack of numbers used in measuring whatever is being weighed. They still weigh milk? So are we hiding how much, or just honoring the fine workings still working, no matter how much we hang upon it.

Earl, we bought it from an old fabric mill that went out of business after the GATT treaty killed its business. Guess it was used to weigh fabric as they had a number of them. Amazingly it only goes to 125 pounds so we don't use it for anything. As it happens there is a large crock of ammo on it...thus the weight indicator.
