Nicely written, the dog has the same pace as a human hunter at a jog, uses smell much better than humans, and likes the height advantage and color perception of humans - and both are pack hunters, although they are capable of hunting alone or in dog man pairs. And as a survival characteristic, they breed foolishly if not monitored well.
A great column every week - I learned plenty today.
Your comment that your cows all have names really did my heart good this morning - I was chastised the other day by a "big" breeder because all 40 of my sheep have names.

Holy macaroni! Yet another (why does that keep astounding me?) Farmside.
I would love to have a domesticated fox. They are such amazing creatures. But I don't know, maybe they would end up to much like cats and not be so amazing after all. Please do not misunderstand, I love cats, but the fox mystifies me!
And this "However, all our cows here at Northview have names, some of them more printable than others,..." just cracked me da hell up! :-)

Good column! It seems cows are getting most of the blame for global warming these days.

The article in the link pretty much has got the vegans going again.
So I don't know should I let my cows loose or just kill them all now and get it over with. Especially telling in the comments is the complaints about cows farting. It is pretty hard to get our cows to fart, I wonder if maybe some of the global warming could be attributed to all the refried beans now being eaten, or maybe all the legumes people are eating to replace meat protein??

Dani, they make such illogical and downright wrong conclusions, but they can afford to shove them in the collective faces of the public often enough that folks start believing them

Anon, thank you for such a very nice comment. It is wonderful what I learn from my kids. Our area ag school is small and has its problems, but it offers an amazing education to a person who wants to learn. I first heard about the fox project from Alan, who heard about it in a lecture. I found it fascinating!
Nita, thanks for the link. It boggles my mind that these people never consider the immense populations of ruminants that populated this and other continents when we arrived. Didn't they eat? Fart? Have an impact on the land? I am saddened by the sheer gullibility of far too many folks.
I find myself looking forward to your Farm Side columns - with good reason.
