Here is a story that ran in Michigan about a New York farm's nine-year struggle to stay in business.

Life on a family farm in the wilds of Upstate New York

I was always a little confused by folks complaining about the farm next door. Presumably the farm was there first... so why did you move there? It seems obvious to me that a farm is potentially going to have smells and machinery going in the early morning and so on and so forth.
If that is not to your liking... then don't move there or get out once you figure it out. It is not the farmer's responsibility to save you from your bad decision making.
In theory does this mean we can go after people who move to close to us farmers if they disturb our cattle? :)
OR What about the city kids who for fun around the 4th of July will set off fireworks 25' from your holding pen and scare the "girls" for days on end? HMMM We farmers need to start making more $$$ either that or find sponsers who would fund these kinds of lawsuits so we can make life as wonderful for those who do and would file againest us.
Billie, thank you! Exactly! Thanks for stopping by and commenting
Sara, Don't we all wish! And the four wheelers and snow machines, whose owners ignore no trespassing signs, cut fences, terrorize animals and destroy crops! Can we sue them?
I know the people from the Willet Dairy and they quoted it correctly when they said the main problem is they are too close to Ithaca, which is a community of career students (transplants because of our famous "green" living), many of them with law degrees, alot of time and a trust fund that allows them to take up non sense causes, to abuse many hard working people who's families have been in the area for 100's of years. I work in the community so I see it everyday ***sigh****
It's amazing that people will move close to a farm and complain about the smell. Didn't they realize the farm was there. It's the same when people move near an airport and then complain about the noise.
WW, I fear the advent of high speed rail. It may be touted as the answer to all of upstate's problems but all I see is an easier way for city people to move to the country and take over and raise land prices until we can't afford to live here...
Cathy M, exactly!
As a bumber sticker I once saw on Rt 13 as I drove through Ithaca said:
"Ithaca: 10 sq miles surrounded by reality"
"bumper sticker"
DOH!
Oh, Joated, that cracked me right up! We are just far enough from Ithaca here to not be too familiar with its culture. I sure have learned a lot lately though!
