I Feel Better Now
It was around seventeen degrees most of yesterday...calm with not too much wind .... it felt plumb warm.
Warm I tell you.
It is incredible how quickly we can adapt to adverse weather. Here in the Great Northeast November was quite warm. Then cold weather came in hard and fast, virtually from one day to the next. It was pretty miserable to adjust, but we can and do get used to nasty and cold. (I will never get used to it taking fifteen minutes to get dressed in the morning and that is just the indoor stuff...)
Last night after milking Alan, Liz and I were feeding baleage. We pull the bales apart, fork big piles into a double-axle wheel barrow and bring it inside to feed out by fork.
Alan loads
I wheel
Liz feeds out.
About five minutes into this job and I was shedding shirts and sweaters like confetti...Standing outside in the half-baked moonlight hatless and bare handed. I ended up carrying my outer shirt, my down vest, gloves and hat all into the house rather than wearing them. If you had told me that would happen on Sunday when I was sitting around trying to read with a hat on and a blanket over my head I would have thought you were joking. Amazing what happens when the wind goes down and the temp comes up....even a little bit.
I am putting this sheep shearer up on Craig's list today. It has literally only been used to shear two sheep. I quickly discovered that I stink at shearing and did it with scissors after the first time. We no longer have sheep so....

You are right - it went from warm to cold almost overnight and the cold felt even colder. I'm so glad it is warmer and that you were warm! It's miserable when you just can't get warm enough.
It's been balmy here - 33 yesterday and again today. I didn't need my snow pants for barn chores. It can stay this way all winter to suit me :)
Have a good day -
I find it amazing that you get used to that kind of cold. It's 23 here this morning with a wind chill of 11 and I'm convinced that if I had to deal with this for long I would freeze to death!
My koi pond had a sheet of ice covering it today.
I find even 10 degrees can be comfortable if you're moving around and doing work. As long as there's little or no wind. If it's windy, you get chilled to the bone. No, make that to the marrow and it really doesn't matter how many layers you've put on.
Hoo Ray for a bit of warmer weather. All this cold really does make one wonder how ANY ONE can think there is global warming. It's even raining in Austrialia.

I'm so happy to hear that the wind has died down for you. Is it any warmer in the house today?
All I know is that I'm ready for a thaw of some sort. Keep warm and just keep looking at that gorgeous flower.
Once I get working in the barns, it's interesting how quickly I start to sweat, even in the coldest weather. First goes the hat and then I just use a hood...and so on.
Then even when I come into the house (despite how cold it can be) it seems really hot! Takes about an hour for my body to regulate.
Deb, It's the wind I guess. Our house is so old and drafty and it is really hard to hold heat inside when it blows hard. You have a great day too, thanks
SCMomma, That is plenty chilly right there. I swear the pile of clothes I have to get into in the morning is two feet tall., lol
FC, wow, that is cold!
Joated, you got it exactly right. The wind makes the bearable impossible. I hate the wind
Linda, I wonder if people who don't work outdoors are even aware of the way the weather is...it has been so cold the whole year.
A few years ago, a Florida friend of mine scoffed at the idea of including "wind chill" in weather forecasts. "If it's 45, it's 45!," she cried.
Yeah. She lives in, hello! Florida!
I think I'd be able to stand this winter better if the summer of 2009 had given me some warmth!
I am glad that i have no use for those! The animals I have and want are plenty for me. I hate to be the barer of bad news but this weekend is supposed to be cold. Hopefully the wind stays down.
Love to hear about your life on the farm. To have to go out in the cold and take care of the chores is something I really admire.
I hope you can keep your house warm at least so you can enjoy that anyway.
June, yeah, there is a sad reality to that wind chill thing. I really hate the wind.
Lisa, yeah, I see that...hopefully the wind will stay down so it isn't too bad. Really nice out today....
Bernie, thanks for visiting and welcome! The guys have been doing all they can but it is really hard to heat a house this old and this large.
