Weather
Downy woodpecker
And still more weather. I know it's January and we have to expect it and all, but dang, it is cutting into my blogging time. Big wind predicted for today...hoping that barn roof stays down until we can get some estimates on fixing it and get the tin back on.
I hate the wind. We live just where the river comes out of a bend and it gets all lined up and howling and smacks right into our house. Right where our bedroom is. It actually gets kind of scary sometimes, like being on a tossing ship lashed by a storm. We don't get much sleep on nights like that.
Alan gave me heck for not posting yesterday, as he is back at college and was between classes and bored. What can I say? It was Wednesday, I was finishing up the Farm Side and the bills and feeding the baleage and I was just....busy....
That blurry little girl in the photo above crashed into one of the big windows and stunned herself. Thankfully that is a very rare occurrence. As it happened I was right there when it happened. I ran outside, snapped a quick shot, and picked her up very carefully, about two seconds ahead of a marauding barn cat. Literally. For a fraction of a second, she was small and still in my fingers, then with a flick of those outspread wings she was gone, down across the driveway to the ash trees there, safe for another day.
I'm with you about wind. Thankfully our house doesn't toss like a ship at sea (that would just freak me out.) But the noise of it makes sleeping almost impossible.
I'm also in a very windy place. A friend had her barbeque blown across her patio and a neighbor's storm door was blown off the house. I've never seen the wind so bad.
I hate when they crash into the windows. Not many cats here so most set until they come to their senses and then they are off. Makes you wonder what goes thru' their minds when they get whacked when there appears there is nothing to run into!
I'm glad Alan voiced his concern. I too was worried that something serious might have happened that kept you away from the keyboard. Especially after the report from earlier in the week.
As for the wind...Oy! There's a reason I call my place the Aerie. And why there's a wind farm on the ridge. Thankfully, it's constant and not often horrendous. But when it's bad, it's like the little girl with the little curl.
We get a couple of thumps against the windows every week. The collisions seldom preoduce fatalities because the feeders are spaced either too close to the windows to produce the necessary velocities for more than a brief headache or far enough away that the birds can avoid the direct hits. But when a hawk sends them into a frantic escape-at-any-cost mode....
Sara, I can't begin to say how much I hate it. Just watched two more pieces of tin come off the roof... I agree on the spring thing. I miss green
Cathy, wow, that is quite a breeze!
JB, I don't know why it doesn't happen more than it does here, but must be the windows look opaque to them (hmmmm, mnaybe I should wash them). What does happen every now and then is that a partridge will somehow gain enough elevation to crash right through one of the upstairs windows. What a mess that makes!
Joated, I felt bad...my mom was worried...my brother was worried....I just ended up spending the whole morning writing the Farm Side. When it gets crazy here it is so hard to concentrate.
Annie, as I am also enjoying yours. I enjoy especially your sense of humor!
Linda, when I saw that it was still there I feared serious damage and the cat was on her way. I am so glad it was able to fly away. I enjoy the little woodpeckers. I leave suet out year round and they come in all year. Then they bring the babies in and try to leave them behind or at least get them to eat for themselves. It is so delightful to watch them!
We have a lot of wind also; live by an overpass for the interstate & it whips down the "alley". Our bedroom used to have 3 exposed walls before we added bathroom; I thought some nights it would pick it up & we'd sail away!
Its blowing to beat the band down here in Norwalk CT. Thankfully I'm heading west tonight, right into the next storm coning out of Kansas. Stay Warm..:-)

I'm glad you could be there for the bird. Can you imagine the headache it must have had.

I feel for you, because as I am writing this the wind is a howling and the chill factors are going down! You try to stay warm.
Nice Save!

LindaW, wow, I'll bet you are glad of that bathroom! It gets crazy here when it is blowing....
Lisa, thanks, it sure is chilly this morning!!!
FC, I was so glad that it didn't have a tragic ending.
Ed, thanks, you stay warm and safe too. I don't envy you out on the road in weather like this!
