The Show must go On

Plantin' taters

This morning will be a hard act to follow. Before my eyes were really open channel one was showing a Ruby-throated Hummingbird that was visiting every single flower on the Cigar Plant found at Sunnycrest a couple of weeks ago.

It was a soft blur of motion, then rattled like a moth against a window as it entered the center of the plant and its wings hit the leaves.

How nice to know that it does attract hummers, as advertised.I found a different member of the same family this week....coincidentally...and I am sold on Cuphea. Very nice plants.

Then I went out the other door for some reason and a female American Redstart was flitting around the new flowerbed Alan and I built this weekend. She has become so tame! she flies right up to see what I am about and tugs at every bit of string and fiber around the yard, looking for nest linings I guess.

It is sweet to see the old cows and the heifer out on the hill. The grass is up to the heifer's back. All you could see of her last night was a dark line above the green. Of course if we kept the deworming program running right, back in the day, this pasture would feed fifty heifers for the season...or at least most of it.

Three isn't much of a strain. They need their salt block though....so I am nagging at the salt block moving people to get 'er done.

What a beautiful life . .
And this just floors me:

I love every post you offer us, so full of the sights and sounds, joys and sorrows, delights and agonies of your special farm and dear family, and the wild critters that offer daily surprise. I don't comment on each post, but I want you to know that I read every one of them with great pleasure, and yours first, just in case I don't have time at the moment to get to more than one. I know that it can feel like a burden to post a blog some days, but your readers sure do appreciate that you make the effort.

Mom, she is such a little worker! Loves to join in any activity, indoors or outdoors. She is sick this week though and I feel so sad for her. She is just miserable. Love you

Cathy, it is such a wonder! If I wrote about all the encounters with birds and wildlife that occur every single day that is all I would have room for. This morning grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds were fighting off a crow. I went down to the barn looking for Daisy and found a grackle chick lying on the concrete, dead. And then a crow was mobbing a Red-tailed Hawk, just moments later. All day every day...it's a wonder I ever get any work done. lol

Nita, she loves the garden!

Jacqueline, thank you so very much. Your kind words mean a lot to me. I love to share the awe and wonder that occurs around us. Sorry I don't write every day....I used to, but I guess I just get lazy now some days. And some days nothing happens. lol BTW, I love your blog too, both for the beauty of places I will never see, and for the opportunity to learn about plants. I have things in my garden, such as Snakeroot, which I would never have IDed without you. We saw so many things at 13th lake that I wished you were there to ID for us. I visited you because I know I had seen them on your blog, but didn't find them....alas....
