A Blinger

Shortly after five today, just as it came out of the camera

Or actually a whole string of them.

Brown Thrashers dusting in the driveway and panting from the heat

A blinger is what the boss's mom used to call a day like this when the sun comes up like a big copper gong, bangs out its song of summer heat all day, and then refuses to let things cool down in the evening.

We are maintaining some semblance of normalcy just the same. The boss has to do hay, weather or not and all. Animals need to eat and drink and be paraded in and out all day. The garden makes its feelings known about heat as well.

We open doors and windows at night and close them to hold in the coolishness. Strategically placed fans whir day and night. We drink a lot of water and eat freeze pops and sherbet...we had sherbet for supper last night in fact...

And we just wait for the weather to break, which may happen Wednesday night.

This one is edited, but it is just how it feels outside

We are having a blinger also...hideous heat with lots of wildfires around us. Sure could use some rain.

Whoo! I can feel that heat just by looking at your photos! This is exactly the kind of heat wave we had 30 years ago, the week before my daughter got married on July 9, 1998. It never cooled off at night, so our house stayed unbearably hot while we had to entertain out-of-town family. It was 103 degrees in Saratoga Springs on the wedding day, and the flowers we had intended to place around the outdoor venue where the wedding took place just wilted and looked half-dead. I really felt sorry for the groom and his groomsmen in their dark wool suits and neckties. But oh happy day, the loving couple are still married, about to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

Linda, we have been getting enough rain to keep fire danger reasonable, but I don't think folks in NY take the danger of forest fires seriously enough. My dad fought fires when I was a baby and it can get bad here too when it gets dry and the lightning strikes...or when people get stupid or malicious. Hope things calm down for you soon.

Jacqueline, Oh, my word, that must have been awful. Congrats to them on 30 years though. In today's world that is a real accomplishment!
