Center of the dance

We hadn't heard the woodcock since I posted about him the other night so I figured that he had moved on. However, I heard a faint twitter when I was walking over from the barn tonight, once again as the last pink faded in the west. Soon a loud peent came from over by the horse pond. I wanted to walk up there, but I was pretty sure crashing through the brush with a flashlight would spook him, so I just stood in the driveway behind the car. The Interstate was loud, but I could hear the peent quire clearly Figured it would be hard to hear the sky dance, but danged if he didn't do a big circle right over my head. I have never heard one make such a huge circle, all the way from the pond to the heifer barn, which is on the other side of the house. It was great....worth waiting for my dinner of homemade soup to stand and listen.

My mother is excited by a bird. And people think I'm odd. Wonder where I got it from?

You lucky ducky! It's going to be too blinking cold her for DAYS to go the several miles to my woodcock habitat.

What kind of soup? Inspire me :0)

Yeah Beeze, I am odd aren't I...but I have so much fun!

Thanks Laurie..I went out later under the full moon and enjoyed him some more

Cathy, I am lucky enough to be able to stand on the back porch watching the dogs and hear him fly right over.
As to the soup, this time it was hamburger, tomato, vegetable....LOTS of veggies. We raise our own beef and I make a lot of various soups and stews. I get them going on the stovetop, then finish them in the oven while I am out milking the cows at night.

Over two weeks ago, just before we left for a holiday, we heard the woodcocks on our property. Last night, I heard them twitter and buzz again so they are still here and still looking for mates. They nest here on our property so we don't have to go anywhere to see them but just be quiet and listen. If the snow would only go away and the temperatures go up, we could hear them from our bedroom.

OW, thanks for visiting....it sounds wonderful to live among them and to hear them in the night. What a wonderful lullaby. We can hear some night birds from our room, but mostly we get the music of the Interstate....sort of like bad rap with big speakers.
