Ran errands again with the girls while the boss spread fertilizer and disked it in. I don't know if he is going to plant corn tomorrow or try to bale some hay or both. We barely see him since Liz is home and he can do field work whenever he wants to.
Making cheese at Palatine Valley Dairy (where we stopped to pick up a Semex Jersey stud book....(don't ask).
Naturally we bought some cheese too. How could we not?

What are those guys doing with their hands?
rurality, Hi! Thanks for stopping by. They are cutting the cheese curd into long loaves along the side of the tank, then moving them down the tank. It is really neat to visit the cheese place when they are making cheese...and they make about the best cheese curd you can get.
Looks like you guys are on vacation since Liz is home - Jersey?? Great pics! I'm envious of your weather. Our corner is the only place getting rain in the whole US, with a high of about 50*
I bet the Boss is relieved to be out planting.
I love cheese. Even some of the stinky cheeses. I can go into San Francisco or to Petaluma for a similar treat that you had, but it's quite a drive, one which I often don't find the enthusiasm to do. I can't seem to pull myself away from these pics! Hey, what DO they do with the whey that drains off?
nita, it sure feels like vacation. We had to go up county to get some barn calcite, beard and some excenell for a sick calf. We stopped at the cheese place, because they are our Semex rep's family and he was there. Liz needed to get a stud book so she can pick out sires for her four Jersey cows this summer. We had a lot of fun though, the whole trip
Steve, you know, I have no idea how they deal with the whey. I went on their website (which has more and better photos of their cheese making) and didn't see any reference to it. Next time we are up that way I will ask. They are really nice folks, who hosted our 4-H dairy judging practices and make many contributions to the community. The owner knows more about milk marketing than any one I have ever met.
Nita...that was bread not beard. The boss has enough beard already
I also forgot - you still have Dunkin Donuts!! They are all closed down here and there is a dearth of good donut shops.
I wondered about the beard... my DH grew a beard when he broke his neck, and when he shaved it after 17 years, our kid wouldn't look at him and she cried and cried!
Nita, ha! That is hilarious. When we met the boss had long sideburns. When Lizzie was a baby she loved to pull them. finally when she was five he shaved them off for her for her birthday. Sorry about the donuts. We actually go there mostly for coffee and smoothies. Too expensive for me actually but the girls buy them for me. lol
Great fieldtrip! Or I mean Road Trip! Thanks for sharing us with this!
MOn@rch, ha! It kind of was a sort of field trip, wasn't it?
