A Fisher of Liz

Or was it a pekan? Anyhow she met one on the bridge between the house and barn yesterday when we were walking over to milk. She gasped, it snarled and the encounter was over just that quickly.

Personally I have never seen one, nor had she, but she described it perfectly. There were tracks....BIG tracks.....tracks at least four inches long from front to back. That is a big footprint!

Here is a story about how fishers are becoming quite common in the area.

And here is another story that makes me glad that this one snarled at Liz and then went on its way.

And here is a pretty good description of the critter and the lifestyle of the snarky and furry.

Wonder if this guy is behind the demise of our dear Lucy and the sudden absence of a favorite barn kitty, Calico Girl.....and the clawing of the ag bags. We were blaming coyotes and we certainly have those too. If you want to read the whole story check out Friday's Farm Side.

  5. Never heard of Fishers until now and now that I've read about them I'm really glad they don't live in my neck of the woods!
Glad he didn't bother Liz. Ya'll have some scary stuff running around up there.

  6. Fishers are definitely expanding their range.
A fisher or a pine marten decimated my parents' chicken population last year. They have game chickens that roost in trees and the fisher (or marten) ate a bird a night until they were gone.

  10. Fishers are certainly becoming more numberous. We've got two (one of each sex) in the forest around the Bolt Hole a little west-northwest of you. Captured both on game cameras set over the remains of butchered deer.

Two years ago I was privileged to have the smaller of the two travel a game trail right past where I was sitting on a stool. It stopped just 5 feet from me before suddenly turning directly away from me. It never acknowledged my presence before it went on its way. Very cool!

  11. Lisa, I was aware of them partly because one of Alan's friends was active in the Pinebush study. Didn't expect one here though

Dickiebo, prolly should! And yeah, now I am kind of nervous walking over in the dark

Dani, it is...I titled my newspaper column about it, "Where the Wild Things Are." lol

Linda, thanks, we will. It was back yesterday too, but all we saw were fresh tracks

ScMomma, we only live a few yards past the town limit sign...it amazes me just how wild it is so close to civilization!

Joce, what a shame! We have been losing poultry for a couple of years, but so far not from inside the hen house. I am thinking some amendments to the door may be in order

anon, me neither. You would probably laugh at how jumpy I am at every sound out in the bushes in the dark now. lol

Liz, I know kiddo. I'm not wanting to meet it myself

June, read both stories. Wow! I am so glad Angus came through that Hell all right. That was simply terrible!

Matt, love you too. I can't believe how common they are becoming. Never seen one, but I guess I'd best be looking out now.

Joated, wow, close encounter..we always wanted to get a game cam and put it up in the woods. Now I am thinking if we ever do get one we can just put it right here between the house and the barn. Plenty of game right up close and personal!
