The difference between this scenario and this one.
Two people whose job, (or potential job,) description includes rules governing dress.
Two people who feel that they have the right to express their religious beliefs with articles of dress.
One is fired.
And everyone is fine with that.
One gets an apology for the outrageous offense against them.
And that's okay too.
I just don't get it. I'm moving to France.

I don't get it either, I am beginning to think we are not in America anymore!
Our GOD has become politically incorrect in our own country and it now taking a back seat to all the religeous beliefs of the foreigners that come here looking for a handout. And they get them!
Why is it they come here thinking we should change for them? They SHOULD be grateful for a life here and do whatever is needed to adjust and fit in.
It reminds me of when I used to work at jcpenneys. We werent allowed to say Merry Christmas etc... We had to say happy holidays instead to avoid offending people. Since when are good wishes offensive. I don't care if you don't celebrate it. thats not whats important. Its about good will towards others.
in the second one, it sounds like there were other things going on - they left him alone until he started bringing his bible to work? more to the story, i'm thinking.
since i get to share an office with a zealot who spends quite a bit of time blithering about his god, i can only sympathize with that guy's coworkers.
from my point of view, there is very little similarity between the two, imho.
I agree with Ericka. It for sure sounds like a lot more was going on there.
Jan, I know, I just used France because of the head scarf flap there...they have big problems. We are getting them

Deb, ours certainly is. Other ones are just fine. And I agree with you very strongly. My family came the hard way...and are still here, still struggling.

Troll, it was just a joking reference to the big flap over head scarves there. I think the head honcho banned them by natioal law a week or two ago. I hope some people do still fight....
Ericka, alas we will have to agree to disagree. I am willing to bet my last wooden nickel that if that young man had brought a Koran to work and used it any way he wanted to Home Depot would have been terrified of the repercussions of even reprimanding him. I don't like to be proselytized any more than anybody else does, but we are bending over to make concessions for any religion that asks for them, while stomping all over Christianity any way we can. I don't like it much

I can't explain either, but here is my best shot.
People love the underdog. Whether right or wrong, many believe we need to stand up for the minority in every situation.
Christianity is huge and organized, therefore bad. Humans have the power over animals,so humans are bad. United States is the most powerful country in the world and therefore bad. People working, marrying the opposite sex, paying bills and insurance, is the norm and thus bad.
It's not that hard to see that the lazy want to be board members who tell the industrious members of society how we should help them.

One is wearing an article of clothing that is "mandated" by her religion. The other is someone who wishes to wear a pin reflecting his religion; it isin't "mandated" by the bible to wear pins announcing one's christianity. Now if Home Depot fired him for going to church on Sundays, it's another story altogether. The story I read stated that Home Depot gave the worker another pin, "united we stand", to reflect his support for America. I remember the slogan well. He refused, so he obviously wanted to push his christianity along with his "support" for the USA. I agree that they had the right to fire him. It's one thing to promote your religion, or to push it into others' faces, but it's a whole different story to wear something that is a part of one's religious beliefs, and has been for centuries. If she were wearing pins that stated "allah is great" or something to that affect, then they should be able to fire her as well.
