Sunday Matt and Lisa presented us with this nifty free-standing hen house. Liz and I moved the girls in yesterday and they seem to approve quite heartily. Nick showed the border collie's roots and origins by pointing it like any good setter might. He looked pretty funny out there on the lawn, front paw curled to his chest and tail gently waving. He is so fascinated by the hens that I have to remind him what he is out there for.
Update...we have lots of snow, it just doesn't show in this photo

Maybe Nick could be used to "round 'em up and move 'em out" when they head into the garden later this summer. (Actually, having them move into the garden would be a good thing for you, bad for the bugs, wouldn't it?)
Side note: Is all your snow gone already? It's going to take the rain at the end of this week to get rid of that at the Aerie. And maybe a month of it to clear the Bolt Hole where Mark says it's still a few feet deep.
Wow - very nice! Nothing like a NEW chicken house. Mine is pretty ripe at the moment, I'd like a magic wand for it. Congrats on the new quarters!
Must be nice to have no snow! We have melted quite a bit but still have a lot to go. Maybe with the rain this weekend the rest will go, the only problem is all the water and mudd. The chickens look very happy in their new home!

Ditto what everyone has said. You are thawed already? How's the sugaring going with no snow? Geeze, I wish I coulda seen Nick pointing like that. That's one of those "betcha can't do it again" moments, for sure.

Joated, alas Nick has rounded up a chicken or two in his lifetime, but the consequences were permanent for the chicken and nearly so for him...and no on the snow. I would have but to have pointed the camera south instead of Northwest for a whole panorama of snow.
Teri, that kind of magic wand would be most welcome in many places. Did you notice the Teri chicken as star of the show? She is one of the chickies you gave us a while back
Lisa, as I said to Joated, we have lots and lots and lots of snow, plus equal amounts of mud to set it off. lol. Thanks for the coop btw. The hens seem very happy!
Mappy, we still have snow. Lots of snow. Deep Snow. White snow. Cold snow. It just doesn't show in that pic. lol I hope you do get the coop you want and thanks for this one, which is lovely.

What a nice hen house..so new and CLEAN! My son wants me to get some layers (i haven't had chickens in about 7 years) as he's been on a high protein weight lifters diet. I will hafto show him yours..so he can build something like it for me.
Your (or should I say Liz's) red calf is beautiful. This might be a stupid question..but is she registered as a and can you show her as a red Holstein? or as a Shorthorn?
Akaangrywhiteman, is that what they are singing?!? I heard something out there but I thought it was just the guinea fowl up in the other coop setting up a racket.

Faithful, it is a great coop. I have seen some like it that you can walk into too, which you might want to look at if you are building a coop. This one is amazingly convenient!
As to the registration and showing. She can be registered as a milking shorthorn. She can't however, be shown, but her calves can. We do have one such calf from a half bred that we may show this summer....although I really like the calves from the bull we had here better than the ai sired one.
