More Farm Walk Stuff

Beam me up, Scotty!

Today is our payback for yesterday's warmth and beauty. Rain. High winds. General yuckiness....incoming. I am hoping we get the cows in before the rain starts. Milking wet cows is not such a pleasant chore. Several of mine think it is just peachy to lean on me when I wash their udder and put the milker on. Bad enough when they are dry, but when they are dripping...ugh.

Milk Weed is not open yet.
I love the silvery lining of the pods when the fluff pops out

Bonanza of box elder bugs. I didn't get time this summer to photograph the amazing egg laying party they threw in the big box elder behind the house. Everything about them is pink and black...even the eggs are pink!

Box Elders are moving in like crazy here and our milk weed has split and flown. Love your cow!

I hear you on milking the wet cows! Just did that, only I have one cow that always smacks me in the face with her sopping wet tail too. Never does it when her tail is dry....That is a cute cow too. Jersey/Holstein cross?

We call those things maple bugs here.....they can go anywhere....they do too!

At least the cow looks ready for cooler weather. She already has her hat and ear muffs on!

Blessings upon you, dear lady, for finding appreciative things to say about Box Elder Bugs. I have read that Box Elders are among those trees with the highest value to wildlife. Their seeds hang on until late in the winter. providing food when little else is left. I suppose their bugs are food for other critters as well.

Linda, there is an incredible bunch of them this year! And thanks, that is Scotty, a personal favorite of mine

Jessika, oh, yes, those sloppy tails! Scotty is half Jersey and her Mama, Broadway is half Holstein and half milking shorthorn, but is registered as a Milking Shorthorn. Scotty's milking shorthorn half sister, Rose Magnolia won grand champion shorthorn this summer. We were thrilled.

Linda, oh yes, I am sure that bunch will join us in here for the winter. lol

Paul, she does! It amazes me how black she as turned. As a baby she was the color of warm butterscotch.

WW, we certainly have enough of them...both box elders and their bugs. We are kind of entertained by the bugs...which come indoors at will... and rescue them from drowning in the milkhouse and such. There are always a couple in there all winter, noodling around the place. They do no harm.
