Well, it depends on where it's located, of course, but as I was at the Moose Festival in Indian Lake yesterday and listened to a DEC ranger tell us all kinds of neat things about mooses (maybe meeses), I do happen to know that moose will do something like that during rutting season, which is now. I saw a photo proving it. :)
Could be a deer or elk!
aka, this was over off Corbin Hill in a swamp we often visit. Anything is possible.
